Summary: Nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) are playing an increasingly important role in the healthcare workforce. However, due to indirect billing practices, much of the care they provide is not reflected in claims data. By using prescriptions to identify indirectly billed visits, it was found that the number of such visits has been increasing over the years. Eliminating indirect billing could result in significant cost savings for Medicare, particularly impacting smaller primary care practices.

It seeks to understand the structures, processes, and outcomes of NP/physician collaborative models in order to inform the development of a collaborative practice framework for LTC clinical leadership.

Summary: Based on the NHAMCS report from 2010 to 2017, it was found that approximately 21.0% of ED visits in the United States were seen by PA/NP, with 8.6% being seen by PA/NP alone. There was an increase in NP visits from 2014 to 2016, and PAs/NPs in the ED share many similar practice characteristics.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted academic medical centers unevenly, causing resource constraints and liquidity challenges while also increasing the need for improved patient access and clinical outcomes. Data analytics can help these centers achieve operational efficiencies and improve financial expectations. However, there is a lack of analytical instruments and guidance on tracking the clinical and financial productivity of physician assistants (PAs) and nurse practitioners (NPs).

Summary: The benefits of transition to practice programs are well supported in the literature, but there are often organizational barriers to implementation. Key strategies to establish organizational support include securing leadership buy-in, having a clear leadership model, and creating a business case. Essentia Health's pilot program used data to secure buy-in and expand the program to all departments within the health system.

Summary: This study examines the impact of policy measures on the development of nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) in the Netherlands. The study finds that government training subsidies are associated with the growth of NP and PA workforce, but other policy measures do not consistently coincide with trends in NP/PA training or employment. In addition, fiscal austerity measures lead to a decrease in NP/PA training intake. Overall, the NP and PA workforce in the Netherlands is increasing.
