Summary: This study estimates the burden and cost of illness of multiple sclerosis (MS) in Italy in 2019 from a societal perspective. The results show a significant impact of the disease on patients' daily activities and work, increasing with disability. Fatigue is identified as a major burden. The overall cost of the disease in Italy is estimated at 4.8 billion euros.

Summary: In this study, the healthcare claims database in France was used to examine the costs incurred by patients hospitalized for invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) over a 6-year period. The economic burden of IMD was found to be high, driven primarily by the long-term costs associated with managing sequelae.

Summary: Heart failure patients have a wide range of health costs, and individual management differences can lead to significant cost heterogeneity. There are noticeable differences between high-cost and low-cost groups, with younger age, hospitalization, and comorbidities being potential factors associated with higher costs.

Summary: Valid estimates of cancer treatment costs are important for priority setting, with higher lifetime costs identified for cancers with a 5-year relative survival between 50% and 70%. Future cancer costs are highly dependent on future cancer incidence, changes in death risk, and cancer-specific unit costs. Gender- and cancer-specific estimates of treatment costs are important for assessing equity of care and understanding resource consumption.

Summary: Childhood illness imposes a significant economic burden on society. A study on 700 children investigated the economic impact of illness in the first three years of life, finding that factors such as fish-oil supplementation during pregnancy, gestational age, and birth weight were associated with reduced costs, while cesarean delivery was associated with higher costs. Targeting perinatal risk factors may help reduce the financial burden of common childhood illnesses.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the prevalence of chronic critically ill (CCI) children in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU), compare their clinical characteristics and ICU resource use with non-CCI children, and identify associated risk factors of CCI. The results confirm the clinical vulnerability and the complexity of care of CCI children as defined in the study, highlighting the need for early identification and adequate staffing to provide appropriate and good quality care.

Summary: The study analyzed the hospitalization costs of severe burn inpatients in Southwest China. It found that the average total cost per patient was 212,755.45 CNY, with medical consumables being the largest portion of the costs. The study suggests the need for an effective burn prevention program, shorter hospital stays, and promoting wound healing to reduce the medical costs of severe burn inpatients.

Summary: This study analyzed the cost savings of quality improvement projects using different cost measures and insurance types. The results showed higher complications rates and costs for Medicare and Medicaid/Uninsured patients compared to Private patients. It also highlighted the importance of using variable costs rather than total costs to accurately estimate the potential cost savings of quality improvement interventions.

Summary: This paper introduces a hybrid machine learning algorithm for predicting healthcare cost by first learning the isolated characteristic variables using network structure learning algorithms and then training regression algorithms. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme can achieve similar or higher prediction accuracy with a reduced amount of data, compared to popular single machine learning algorithms.

Summary: This study quantified healthcare resource utilization and costs for individuals with late-onset Huntington's disease (LoHD), comparing them with adult-onset HD (AoHD) and non-HD controls. The results showed that LoHD patients had significantly higher healthcare burden and costs than non-HD controls, similar to AoHD patients. This highlights the significant healthcare burden associated with LoHD.

Summary: A retrospective cohort study was conducted to assess healthcare resource utilization and costs of patients with asthma in the Brazilian Supplementary Healthcare System. The study focused on hospitalization data and found that the emergency visit rate was 0.34 per person-year, while the hospital admission rate was 0.04 per person-year. The mean length of hospital stay was 8.82 days, with an average cost per episode of 3178 Brazilian Real (BRL). The study also revealed that ICU-dependent asthma exacerbations could cost up to 75,000 BRL in the Supplementary Healthcare System. Improving disease control could help alleviate the burden on both the healthcare system and patients.

Summary: This study estimated the annual costs of MG patients in Bulgaria from a societal perspective and found that direct healthcare costs slightly outweighed indirect costs, with drug costs having the biggest impact. Severe generalized disease, disease crises, and recurrent infections were identified as significant cost drivers. The reliance on family members as informal caregivers among Bulgarian MG patients was common, likely due to the lack of access to appropriate social services. Further research and targeted health policies are needed to meet the needs of these patients.

Summary: This study used the MISCAN-Breast model to evaluate 736 breast cancer mammography screening strategies. The results showed that strategies combining mammography and clinical breast examination (CBE) had higher costs and minimal differences in outcomes compared to mammography-only strategies. The current strategy in Georgia, biennial mammography screening from 40 to 70 years with CBE, is close to the optimal strategy but requires high additional costs. The optimal strategy for Georgia would be triennial mammography-only screening from 45 to 66 years.

Summary: Undertaking value assessments for health system inputs is crucial for allocative efficiency, especially in low- and middle-income countries. However, there are methodological challenges in applying current economic evaluation techniques to health system input investments. A comprehensive standardized framework for value assessments does not exist, and the literature largely ignores these methodological issues, potentially leading to inaccurate cost-effectiveness assessments.
