Summary: This study evaluated the effects of crude lentinan (CLNT) on the intestinal microbiota and the immune barrier in rainbow trout infected with infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV). The results showed that supplementary CLNT reduced trout mortality caused by IHNV, strengthened the intestinal immune barrier, and modified the intestinal microbiota. Additionally, CLNT promoted the growth of short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria and increased the production of certain fatty acids in the intestine of IHNV-infected trout. These findings suggest that CLNT has promising prebiotic properties in preventing IHNV infection in rainbow trout.

Summary: This study reports the first detection of Flavobacterium psychrophilum in Korea and describes its genotypic and phenotypic characteristics. The study also reveals the pathogenicity and antibiotic resistance of the pathogen and proposes control measures. This is important for understanding the impact of this pathogen on Korean rainbow trout populations and establishing surveillance and control measures to prevent further transmission and outbreaks.

Summary: Research showed that DMF can enhance intestinal TJ barrier integrity by increasing the expression of occludin and claudin-1, while reducing the expression of claudin-2. This regulation involves the induction of occludin protein translation via mTOR and silencing Cldn2 mRNA via miR-16-5p.

Summary: Research has shown that rainbow trout crosses created by mating resistant strains can exhibit some level of pathogen resistance, but not all crosses show resistance, and only a few multigenerational strains are suitable for further evaluation.

Summary: Feeding rainbow trout with deoxynivalenol (DON) or partially feeding (pair-fed) can significantly reduce mortality rates when infected with Flavobacterium psychrophilum. Fasted or DON-fed fish showed increased autophagy in the liver, while fasted fish showed decreased autophagy in muscle. Treatment with chloroquine (CQ) increased Atg gene expression in the liver. The mechanisms behind the resistance of rainbow trout fed DON, CQ, or pair-fed to F. psychrophilum infection are still unclear.

Summary: The blood-brain barrier poses a challenge to drug delivery to the central nervous system. Among the components of the tight junctions in the blood-brain barrier, claudin-5 has been studied extensively as a target for enhancing drug permeation into the brain. However, sustained knockdown of claudin-5 is lethal in mice and administration of an anti-claudin-5 antibody can cause convulsions in nonhuman primates.

Summary: CLDN4 is a crucial component of tight junctions in epithelial cells and is overexpressed in many epithelial malignancies. Changes in CLDN4 expression are associated with epigenetic factors, inflammation, and growth factor signaling. CLDN4 plays a role in maintaining the tumor microenvironment and acts as a barrier to anticancer drug entry.

Summary: The study showed that claudin-5a is crucial for establishing and maintaining the blood-neural barrier during zebrafish development. Knockdown of claudin-5a resulted in selective leakage through the BBB, decreased expression of glucose transporter 1 in cerebral microvessels, and leakiness in the blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier, indicating overall abnormal development of the blood-neural barriers.

Summary: Periodontal disease, considered a common inflammatory disease, is believed to contribute to the development of gastrointestinal diseases and other systemic diseases by affecting the intestinal barrier through periodontal pathogens. This review summarizes studies on the effects of periodontal pathogens on the intestinal barrier, potentially shedding light on the link between periodontitis and gastrointestinal diseases.

Summary: This study reports a novel mutation in the CLDN5 gene associated with alternating hemiplegia with microcephaly. The mutation leads to the conversion of the blood-brain barrier into an anion-selective channel, indicating that CLDN5 associated alternating hemiplegia is a channelopathy.

Summary: This study assessed the genetic diversity of Flavobacterium psychrophilum isolates from apparently healthy rainbow trout from several fish farms in the same watershed in France. High diversity was revealed by two different genotyping methods, with the majority of isolates being unrelated to the predominant clonal complex worldwide. Thirteen novel sequence types were discovered, suggesting a diverse subpopulation of F. psychrophilum in rainbow trout.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of Clostridioides difficile binary toxin (CDT) on the intestinal epithelial barrier and found that sublethal concentrations of CDT induced barrier dysfunction with increased permeability and redistribution of tight junction proteins. This suggests that CDT may contribute to diarrhea by compromising the intestinal barrier function.
