Summary: Depressive disorders are the most burdensome psychiatric disorders worldwide. Efforts to advance treatment have been limited due to various factors, including suboptimal animal models and imprecise terminology. To overcome these issues, researchers have introduced a new taxonomical concept called depression-like syndrome (DLS) for modelling depression in laboratory mice. The DLS approach uses a combination of clinical depression criteria and Research Domain Criteria to provide a biobehavioural reference syndrome. To assess DLS presence and severity, an algorithm has been designed to ensure statistical and biological relevance of findings. The long-term objective is to use DLS as an inter-model validation standard to improve phenotyping methodology in translational research.

Summary: Anxiety and depression symptoms are common after traumatic brain injury (TBI), but measures of anxiety and depression for this population are scarce. This study evaluated the reliability and validity of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) in 874 adults with moderate-severe TBI using novel indices derived from symmetrical bifactor modeling. The results showed that the HADS primarily reflects a single underlying latent variable of general distress, and caution should be exercised in interpreting the individual subscales.

Summary: This study identified a core set of factors including prior PTSD, social adversity, and DNA methylation using machine learning approaches, which together may predispose individuals to PTSD. Multiple factors play a role in predicting prospective risk of PTSD, with prior PTSD being the most important predictor.

Summary: In comparing bifactor and higher-order models of a general dimension of psychopathology, it was found that the higher-order model provided better fit and more interpretability in associations with established risk variables for mental illness. The research suggests that the higher-order representation of the general dimension of psychopathology may be a more appropriate conceptualization than the bifactor approach, with implications for both research and clinical practice.

Summary: Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have the potential to provide biological insights into disease mechanisms and offer clinically useful biomarkers. This review examines the use of quantitative and transdiagnostic phenotypes in GWAS for major psychiatric disorders. The authors discuss themes and recommendations, including issues of sample size, phenotypic reliability, sources of phenotypic information, and the use of biological and behavioral markers. The review also highlights the importance of multi-trait methods and the potential of dimensional and transdiagnostic phenotypes for gene discovery in psychiatric conditions.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the relationships between gender minority stress and mental health outcomes among European transgender and gender diverse individuals. The results confirmed a significant association between gender minority stress factors and mental health problems in this population. Discrimination based on gender was identified as the most commonly documented risk factor, while factors such as resilience-promoting factors and social support were found to buffer the impact of stressors on mental health.
