Diabetes Mellitus is a metabolic disorder that is spreading rapidly worldwide. Quercetin, a flavonoid, has therapeutic potential in the management of Type-2 DM, as it improves pancreatic beta-cell function, inhibits inflammation, and shows antidiabetic effects.
Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disorder that is spreading alarmingly around the globe. Type-2 DM (T2DM) is characterized by low-grade inflammation and insulin resistance and is closely linked to obesity. T2DM is mainly controlled by lifestyle/dietary changes and oral antidiabetic drugs but requires insulin in severe cases. Many of the drugs that are currently used to treat DM are costly and present adverse side effects. Several cellular, animal, and clinical studies have provided compelling evidence that flavonoids have therapeutic potential in the management of diabetes and its complications. Quercetin is a flavonoid, present in various natural sources, which has demonstrated in vitro and in vivo antidiabetic properties. It improves oral glucose tolerance, as well as pancreatic beta-cell function to secrete insulin. It inhibits the alpha-glucosidase and DPP-IV enzymes, which prolong the half-life of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). Quercetin also suppresses the release of pro-inflammatory markers such as IL-1 beta, IL-4, IL-6, and TNF-alpha. Further studies are warranted to elucidate the mode(s) of action of quercetin at the molecular level. This review demonstrates the therapeutic potential of quercetin in the management of T2DM.

Summary: Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, and its development is linked to oxidative stress. The transcription factor Nrf2 plays a vital role in protecting cells against oxidative stress in cancer growth, progression, and therapy resistance. Therefore, innovative inhibitors targeting Nrf2 are being investigated. This comprehensive review explores the potential of phenolic compounds, found in traditional plant-based remedies, as effective anticancer agents by inhibiting Nrf2. The clinical applications of naturally-occurring bioactive compounds as Nrf2 inhibitors, specifically polyphenols, are also discussed.

Summary: The Keap1/Nrf2/ARE signaling pathway plays a critical role in regulating the cellular response to oxidative stress. This review focuses on the cancer protective role of 21 selected dietary polyphenols by modulating this signaling pathway and associated proteins. The majority of the studies demonstrate the cancer protective effects of these polyphenols mainly in-vitro, highlighting the need for further in-vivo studies and clinical trials to verify their effectiveness in humans.

Summary: Chemical characteristics, sterols, tocopherols, fatty acids profiles, and antioxidant activity of oils extracted from seven types of Ficus carica L. fruits from Algeria were investigated. The results showed that the figs oils had high acid values indicating a high amount of free fatty acids. The dominant lipid fraction in the oils was neutral lipids, followed by glycolipids and phospholipids. Linoleic and linolenic acids were the major unsaturated fatty acids, while palmitic acid was the major saturated fatty acid. The fig oils exhibited good antioxidant activity, which may be associated with their alleged health benefits.
