Validation of a Speech Database for Assessing College Students' Physical Competence under the Concept of Physical Literacy

This study developed a speech database to assess physical competence, one element of physical literacy. The database collected speech samples from 31 healthy Cantonese speakers in rest and after performing exercises. The study trained a support vector machine (SVM) on acoustic features using two speech feature sets, eGeMAPS and ComParE, for speech signal processing. The results showed that the four-class SVM outperformed the one-class SVM, achieving 70% accuracy in the three-class model. The study also suggested future work on predicting physical competence, comparing speech features across age groups, and conducting spectral analysis.
This study developed a speech database for assessing one of the elements of physical literacy-physical competence. Thirty-one healthy and native Cantonese speakers were instructed to read a material aloud after various exercises. The speech database contained four types of speech, which were collected at rest and after three exercises of the Canadian Assessment of Physical Literacy 2nd Edition. To show the possibility of detecting each exercise state, a support vector machine (SVM) was trained on the acoustic features. Two speech feature sets, the extended Geneva Minimalistic Acoustic Parameter Set (eGeMAPS) and Computational Paralinguistics Challenge (ComParE), were utilized to perform speech signal processing. The results showed that the two stage four-class SVM were better than the stage one. The performances of both feature sets could achieve 70% accuracy (unweighted average recall (UAR)) in the three-class model after five-fold cross-validation. The UAR result of the resting and vigorous state on the two-class model running with the ComParE feature set was 97%, and the UAR of the resting and moderate state was 74%. This study introduced the process of constructing a speech database and a method that can achieve the short-time automatic classification of physical states. Future work on this corpus, including the prediction of the physical competence of young people, comparison of speech features with other age groups and further spectral analysis, are suggested.

The effects of caregiver characteristics on behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia of patients with dementia

Summary: This study investigated the association between caregiver characteristics and behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in Taiwanese community-dwelling patients. The results showed that the primary caregiver being the spouse was associated with the presence of delusions in patients with dementia. Caregiver education was correlated with the severity of hallucinations, agitation/aggression, and apathy/indifference in patients, while being the primary caregiver as a child was related to the severity of disinhibition but negatively related to the severity of anxiety in patients. The severity of anxiety and appetite/eating in patients were positively related to spouse primary caregiver and sole primary caregiver, respectively. In terms of distress in caregivers, caregiver education was positively correlated with agitation/aggression, being the primary caregiver as a child was positively related to distress of disinhibition, and spouse primary caregiver was positively related to distress of anxiety and appetite/eating.

Effectiveness of Home-Based Exercise for Nonspecific Shoulder Pain: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Summary: This study evaluates the effectiveness of home-based exercise in treating nonspecific shoulder pain. The findings suggest that home-based exercise is equally effective as other conservative treatments and superior to no treatment. Further research is needed to validate these results.

An Origami-Inspired Quasi-zero Stiffness Structure for Low-Frequency Vibration Isolation

Summary: This paper proposes a novel origami structure with the characteristic of geometric nonunique relation and applies it to the design of a new quasi-zero stiffness (QZS) vibration isolator. By introducing mechanical tension springs, the tube-like structure can be transformed into a QZS structure, and the force-compression relationship and stiffness of the vibration isolator are derived. Experimental and numerical simulation results verify the low-frequency vibration isolation performance of the proposed QZS isolator.

Associations Between Perceived Social Support, Perceived Competence, and Physical Activity in Hong Kong Children With Disabilities During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Summary: This study aimed to examine the associations between perceived social support, perceived competence, and physical activity in children with physical and intellectual disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 291 participants aged 6-17 years from 27 special schools in Hong Kong were included. After controlling for demographic variables, perceived competence had a stronger association with physical activity than perceived social support. This study highlights two key facilitators for shaping physical activity involvement among children with disabilities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Summary: This study aims to develop appropriate tools for assessing physical literacy (PL) and address the current issues in PL assessment. The evaluation de la Litteratie Physique (ELIP) was developed through a Delphi method and cognitive interviews, highlighting four dimensions (physical, affective, cognitive, and social) to be assessed. However, further research is needed to determine the validity, reliability, and sensitivity of ELIP.

Factors associated with physical activity promotion efforts in individuals with chronic diseases: A systematic review from the perspective of patients

Summary: This systematic review aimed to identify the factors influencing healthcare provider physical activity (PA) promotion in individuals with chronic diseases from the perspective of patients. The results showed that factors such as emotional support and public programs for PA were positively related to healthcare provider PA promotion, while conflicting results were found for factors such as age and gender. Further studies with well-designed surveys are needed to confirm these findings.

Association Between Falls, Head Impacts, and Mortality Among Older Adults in Long-Term Care

The Relationship and Effect Among Physical Literacy Attributes in University Physical Education During the Pandemic Quarantine Period

Beyond the Screen: Do Esports Participants Really Have More Physical Health Problems?
