Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is implicated in gut disturbances, both functionally and structurally. It has been noticed that the gut-liver interaction is an important feature in the prevention of systemic inflammation as well as liver health. The optimal functioning of the gut-liver axis depends on gut health. Therefore, gut problems may be important for estimating liver inflammation, while our knowledge of ALD could also provide an insight into gut health. Gut problems accompanied by ALD include gut motility and absorption problems, mucosal damage and the dysbiosis of gut microbiota and gastrointestinal carcinogenesis. Moreover, there is emerging evidence that besides direct inflammatory injury caused by alcohol, gut problems related to ALD play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular and immunological disorders. In this regard, we should consider ALD in relation to both gut health and chronic systemic low-grade inflammation. Accordingly, integrative therapeutic strategies are warranted for treating and preventing ALD and systemic inflammation as well as alcohol-related gut problems.

Predictive Value of Serum Uric Acid to HDL Cholesterol Ratio for Incident Ischemic Heart Disease in Non-Diabetic Koreans

Byoungjin Park, Dong-Hyuk Jung, Yong-Jae Lee

Summary: HDL cholesterol has a role in lipid metabolism and also functions in suppressing blood oxidation reactions and protecting vascular endothelial cells. The uric acid/HDL cholesterol ratio (UHR) has been identified as a new biomarker for evaluating the interactions between inflammatory and anti-inflammatory substances in the blood. The study found a positive association between high UHR values and incident ischemic heart disease (IHD), suggesting that UHR could be a useful measure for assessing cardiovascular risk in the preclinical stage.

Dyslipidaemia-Genotype Interactions with Nutrient Intake and Cerebro-Cardiovascular Disease

Sung-Bum Lee, Ja-Eun Choi, Byoungjin Park, Mi-Yeon Cha, Kyung-Won Hong, Dong-Hyuk Jung

Summary: This study investigated the interactions of genetic variants and nutrient intake on cardiovascular disease, revealing that specific polymorphisms associated with dyslipidaemia and nutrients intake can influence cardio-cerebrovascular disease risk. The findings suggest the importance of genetic factors in dietary guidelines for the prevention and management of cardiovascular disease.

Fatty liver index as a predictor for incident type 2 diabetes in community-dwelling adults: longitudinal findings over 12 years

In-Ho Seo, Hye Sun Lee, Yong-Jae Lee

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the association between fatty liver index (FLI) and incident type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and determine whether FLI could be used as an indicator of T2DM. Analysis of a Korean cohort study data revealed that baseline FLI grade could be a future indicator of T2DM even when prior insulin levels were normal.

Triglyceride Glucose-Waist Circumference (TyG-WC) Is a Reliable Marker to Predict Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

Seungah Song, Da-Hye Son, Su-Jung Baik, Wan-Je Cho, Yong-Jae Lee

Summary: This study aimed to compare the usefulness of modified TyG indices for predicting NAFLD with the TyG index and FLI. The results showed that TyG-WC is a reliable indicator for the presence of NAFLD in Korean adults.

Usefulness of Complete Blood Count (CBC) to Assess Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases in Clinical Settings: A Comprehensive Literature Review

In-Ho Seo, Yong-Jae Lee

Summary: Complete blood count is a commonly requested blood test that evaluates the characteristics and total numbers of cell components in the blood. Recent investigations have shown that the components of complete blood count can be used to predict the risk of cardiovascular disease and metabolic disorders.

Lipid Accumulation Product Index Predicts New-Onset Type 2 Diabetes Among Non-Obese Koreans: A 12-Year Longitudinal Study

Seung Ho Yang, Jihyun Yoon, Yong-Jae Lee, Byoungjin Park, Dong-Hyuk Jung

Summary: This study assessed the longitudinal association between LAP index and incident type 2 diabetes among non-obese Korean adults and found that a high LAP index can be an additional indicator for new-onset T2DM among middle-aged and elderly non-obese Koreans.

Association between the Oxidative Balance Score and Incident Chronic Kidney Disease in Adults

Da-Hye Son, Hye Sun Lee, So-Young Seol, Yong-Jae Lee, Jun-Hyuk Lee

Summary: Oxidative stress is a new risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD). The study aimed to verify the relationship between the overall oxidative balance represented by the oxidative balance score (OBS) and the incidence of CKD. Data from 5795 participants without CKD were analyzed, and a dose-response association between the OBS and incident CKD was found in both men and women. The results suggest that a healthy diet and lifestyle that increase the OBS may help prevent CKD in both genders.

Korean Red Ginseng Potentially Improves Maintaining Antibodies after COVID-19 Vaccination: A 24-Week Longitudinal Study

Jihyun Yoon, Byoungjin Park, Heejung Kim, Seungjun Choi, Donghyuk Jung

Summary: This study aimed to examine the effect of Korean Red Ginseng (KRG) on virus-specific antibodies after COVID-19 vaccination. The results showed that the antibody formation rate of the KRG group was sustained higher than that of the control group for 12 weeks after the second dose, especially in those above 50 years old. It suggests that KRG can enhance and maintain vaccine immune response.

Elevated Uric Acid Levels with Early Chronic Kidney Disease as an Indicator of New-Onset Ischemic Heart Disease: A Cohort of Koreans without Diabetes

Sung-Bum Lee, Hui-Jeong Lee, Ha Eun Ryu, Byoungjin Park, Dong-Hyuk Jung

Summary: Multiple studies have shown that hyperuricemia is associated with the development of ischemic heart disease (IHD). Additionally, there is growing evidence suggesting that hyperuricemia may contribute to the progression of IHD as a pathogenic factor. Ironically, uric acid can also act as an antioxidant, as demonstrated in experimental studies. The aim of this study was to analyze the association between uric acid and IHD in patients with early-stage chronic kidney disease (CKD).
