This paper discusses the potential and optimal pathways for food waste valorization in Indonesia, comparing different conversion technologies. It also considers the challenges and opportunities for wider implementation, including supply chain integration, technological feasibility, and persistent behaviors.
Like many countries, Indonesia generates large quantities of food waste. Food waste is poorly managed due to inadequate treatment practices, which has a harmful impact on the environment. This paper demonstrates the high potential for food waste valorization in Indonesia and outlines the optimal valorization pathways to inform future decision-making surrounding the management of this waste. This paper also compares various conversion technologies for transforming food waste into liquid, solid, and gaseous biofuels. The challenges and opportunities for wider implementation are also considered, including the integration of supply chains and the logistics of food waste management, the technological feasibility, and the persistent behaviors surrounding food waste and energy in Indonesia. The economic and environmental benefits, the perspectives of improved food waste management practices and sustainable fuels, as well as the policy landscape surrounding waste and sustainable energy are also explored. The challenges of scalability and commercialization are also highlighted in this paper. This review demonstrates the best pathways from food waste valorization to bioenergy, including biogas or biodiesel integrated with a black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) composting system. Despite the scale of resources in Indonesia, the pathways and technologies for processing food waste are lacking. Further in-depth studies are required to demonstrate the sustainability and feasibility of food waste transformation into bioenergy to realize its high value.

Biorefining of oil palm empty fruit bunches for bioethanol and xylitol production in Indonesia: A review

Sri Suhartini, Novita Ainur Rohma, Efri Mardawati, Kasbawati, Nur Hidayat, Lynsey Melville

Summary: Indonesia's intensive agro-industrial sector generates a large volume of residues, with potential for conversion of Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunches (OPEFBs) into bioenergy and bio-based products like bioethanol and xylitol. Techno-economic assessment shows potential for simultaneous production of bioethanol, xylitol, and lignin, with significant output to support the wider adoption of commercially viable bioethanol production in Indonesia. Challenges around technical, policy, and supply chains need to be addressed for successful implementation.

Microalgae as feed ingredients and a potential source of competitive advantage in livestock production: A review

Aminu Bature, Lynsey Melville, Khondokar Mizanur Rahman, Poonam Aulak

Summary: This research aims to evaluate the potential competitive advantage of introducing microalgae-based feedstock into the livestock feed industry using the VRIN model. While microalgae feedstock adds nutritional value and has the potential to save other feed ingredients, it is not yet determined if it can fully replace fishmeal. Additionally, microalgae can be used for bioremediation of animal wastewater.

Sustainable strategies for anaerobic digestion of oil palm empty fruit bunches in Indonesia: a review

Sri Suhartini, Nur Hidayat, Novita Ainur Rohma, Roshni Paul, Martasari Beti Pangestuti, Reny Nurul Utami, Irnia Nurika, Lynsey Melville

Summary: This paper reviews OPEFB as feedstock in anaerobic digestion systems and sustainable strategies to enhance methane yield. The findings emphasize the importance of improving the value-added benefits from OPEFBs and making pre-treatment processes more sustainable for wider application.

State of the Art in Anaerobic Treatment of Landfill Leachate: A Review on Integrated System, Additive Substances, and Machine Learning Application

Summary: Leachates from landfills contain high levels of organic and inorganic pollutants, posing a serious threat to the environment. Various methods, such as biological treatment, engineering control, and membrane technology, have been used to manage leachate. Anaerobic digestion (AD) shows promise due to its ability to remove pollutants and generate renewable energy. This review discusses the advantages and disadvantages of AD for landfill leachate treatment, explores different strategies and recent advances, and suggests the need for further improvement in integrated treatment technologies.

Comparison of acid and alkaline pre-treatment on methane production from empty palm oil fruit bunches (OPEFB): Effect on characteristics, digester performance, and correlation of kinetic parameters

Summary: This paper compares the effects of two different chemical pretreatments on the characteristics of OPEFBs, methane production, digestate characteristics, and kinetic modelling. The results show that alkaline-treated OPEFBs have higher methane yields compared to acid-treated OPEFBs. The best treatment is the alkaline pre-treatment of P2N3, which leads to a 1.2-fold increase in methane yield. SEM-EDX analysis reveals that acid-treated OPEFBs have cell wall disruption and mineral loss, while alkaline-treated OPEFBs have more pores due to the release of silica and other chemicals. Both experimental data and models confirm P2N3 (3.8% NaOH) as the best results in terms of lignin reduction and methane production. Further investigations with a focus on sustainability and circular economy perspectives are needed.

Optimisation of Ultrasound Pretreatment of Microalgal Biomass for Effective Biogas Production through Anaerobic Digestion Process

Roshni Paul, Alla Silkina, Lynsey Melville, Sri Suhartini, Michael Sulu

Summary: This study compared the anaerobic digestion remediation of two marine algal biomass species, Tetraselmis suecica and Nannochloropsis oceanica, and found that Tetraselmis suecica had better methane production potential. Ultrasound treatment had a slight impact on the methane production potential of both Nannochloropsis oceanica and Tetraselmis suecica biomass, but ultrasound techniques can still be recommended for effective bioenergy production.

Literature review on ability of agricultural crop residues and agro-in- dustrial waste for treatment of wastewater

Nur Hidayat, Sri Suhartini, Tutut Arinda, Elviliana Elviliana, Lynsey Melville

Summary: This study explores the potential of agricultural crop residues and agro-industrial waste in Indonesia as biosorbents for wastewater treatment. The results show that different forms of these waste materials, including activated carbon, can effectively remove organic pollutants from wastewater. However, there are challenges to the implementation of this technology, such as biosorptive capacity, performance effectiveness, and high operation costs.
