Summary: There are limited studies on the genetic improvement of sugar apple and the characterization and conservation of its germ plasm, which has hindered the fruit cultivation in Brazil. This study estimated the genetic parameters, correlations between agronomic traits, and predicted genetic gains in sugar apple half-sib progenies. The results showed that flower length had high heritability and there were positive correlations between total yield and fruit per plant. Five harvests were found to be sufficient for selecting superior genotypes, and the Mulamba and Mock 2 index was used for simultaneous selection.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of pulsed electric field (PEF) on the ripening of atemoya fruit and found that treatment with 50 kV/m PEF significantly extended the shelf-life, inhibited browning, and reduced firmness loss. These effects were related to the inactivation of enzymes and the suppression of respiration rate.

Summary: In this study, a low molecular weight acidic alpha-galactosidase (CaG) was identified from custard apple seeds and purified using various chromatographic techniques. The purified CaG was found to be a heterodimer with specific kinetic parameters and secondary structures identified through CD spectral analysis. These findings provide insights into the primary sequence and glycan structures of CaG, defining its potential physiological roles in plants and industrial applications.

Summary: A new furofuran lignan, esquamosan, was isolated from the leaves of Annona squamosa L. and its structure was determined by spectroscopic methods. Esquamosan showed concentration-dependent inhibition of contraction in rat aortic rings and inhibited vasocontraction of depolarized aorta with high-concentration potassium. The vasorelaxant effect of esquamosan was mainly attributed to the inhibition of calcium influx and increased release of NO. Additionally, esquamosan exhibited antioxidant capacity similar to ascorbic acid.

Summary: This study investigated the antioxidant, antimicrobial, and in vitro anticancer activity of two Annona cultivars. Results showed that Annona h. seed extract had the highest antioxidant activity, while the peel extracts of both Annona b. and Annona h. exhibited the best antimicrobial activity. Both Annona b. and Annona h. seed extracts showed promising anticancer activity with down-regulated Bcl-2 and up-regulated p53 expression.

Summary: The study aimed to develop a bioactive transdermal patch functionalized with Annona leaf extracts using supercritical impregnation technique. It was found that the optimal impregnation conditions of ALE at 55 degrees C and 300 bar led to transdermal patches with antioxidant and antimicrobial capacity. The use of higher proportions of co-solvent in the system resulted in the best outcomes.

Summary: This study utilized pectinase to degrade Annona squamosa polysaccharide (ASP) and obtained a novel oligosaccharide Z. The structure of Z was identified and its inhibitory activity against α-glucosidase was demonstrated. The oligosaccharide Z has the potential to be utilized as an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor.
