Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a state-of-the-art method for conducting environmental assessments of systems, whether these consist of goods or services, or a combination of the two. However, current LCA guidelines focus on assessing tangible products and lack specific attention to more complex systems, such as Product/Service-Systems (PSS), which also consist of intangible elements. PSS imply a shift in business paradigm from selling specific products to delivering a function, through a mix of products and services, thereby incentivising resource efficiency as well as user satisfaction. Despite their potential to reduce environmental impacts, PSS are not by default more environmentally benign compared to conventional systems, and quantifications of their environmental performance are called for. This paper contributes by showing that specific challenges need to be addressed when using LCA to evaluate the environmental performance of PSS. We identify a set of PSS characteristics that can challenge an LCA study. Three relevant scopes are distinguished, where LCA may be applied: (1) evaluating options within the PSS itself; (2) comparing a PSS with an alternative; and (3) modelling the actual contextual changes caused by the PSS. We derive three pronounced challenges when conducting LCA within the three scopes: (i) identifying and defining the reference system; (ii) defining the functional unit; and (iii) setting system boundaries. We elaborate on how these challenges are discussed in current literature. Recommended future work includes developing adapted guidelines and further empirical case studies that quantify the environmental changes and impacts caused by introducing PSS. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Toward the development of subnational hybrid input-output tables in a multiregional framework

Edgar Towa, Vanessa Zeller, Stefano Merciai, Jannick Schmidt, Wouter M. J. Achten

Summary: Environmental input-output analyses are useful decision support tools at the subnational level, but are hindered by the lack of subnational IO tables. This study demonstrates the development of a multiregional hybrid IOT at the subnational level and exemplifies it for Belgium. The proposed approach combines national hybrid tables, subnational monetary tables, and physical survey-based data, and provides methodological and application-based contributions to the discussion on the relevance of hybrid subnational tables and analyses compared to national ones.

A Trade-Off Navigation Framework as a Decision Support for Conflicting Sustainability Indicators within Circular Economy Implementation in the Manufacturing Industry

Mariia Kravchenko, Daniela C. A. Pigosso, Tim C. McAloone

Summary: Integrating sustainability criteria from a triple bottom line perspective presents a challenge for manufacturing actors, with trade-offs being common but existing approaches for sustainability measurements lacking adequate support for trade-off dialogue and decision-making. Acknowledging trade-offs and utilizing a structured approach can help in making trade-offs explicit and supporting decision-making in a transparent manner.

Circular economy business model innovation: Sectorial patterns within manufacturing companies

Marina P. P. Pieroni, Tim C. McAloone, Daniela C. A. Pigosso

Summary: The market penetration of circular economy business models in most manufacturing sectors is limited due to companies' shortcomings in executing business model innovation. This paper introduces sectorial business model patterns to help manufacturing companies reduce complexity and uncertainty in implementing circular economy business models. The sectorial patterns are based on multidimensional scaling analysis of over 180 cases of companies, prescribing configurations and architectures to address specific sources of waste. Testing with manufacturing companies has shown the potential of these patterns to visualize viability, feasibility, reduce uncertainties, and complexity in implementing business models for circular economy.

Summary: Product-service systems (PSS) can help manufacturing companies differentiate their offerings, create more value for customers, improve economic performance, and reduce environmental impact. This paper presents a prescriptive approach using PSS archetypes to guide the development of new PSS business models. Results show that the method and tool support scoping new PSS BM and encourage servitisation and PSS development in companies with different levels of experience in PSS.

Designing Take-Back for Single Use Medical Devices: The Case of Returpen™

Pravin Kumar Mallick, Kim Bang Salling, Daniela C. A. Pigosso, Tim C. McAloone

Summary: Focus on take-back of waste products, especially Single-Use or Disposable Medical Devices (SUDs), is increasing due to the growing attention on environmental sustainability and circular economy. This study examines the Returpen(TM) initiative in Denmark, which aims to slow the flow of waste by implementing a collaborative take-back system. The initiative achieved a high participation rate and return rate, demonstrating the feasibility of a workstream-based approach for SUD take-back in homecare settings. The pharmaceutical industry is taking proactive measures to contribute to a more circular economy for disposable medical devices.

Summary: This paper proposes a generic process model for the early-stage design of sustainable Product-Service Systems (PSS), aiming to address the lack of clarity and inclusion of sustainability considerations in existing approaches. The proposed model consists of three phases, five activities, and seven clusters of entities that cover the three dimensions of sustainability. This model is developed through a systematic literature review and in-depth content analysis, resulting in a comprehensive and systematic approach for the early-stage design of sustainable PSS.

How can technology assessment tools support sustainable innovation? A systematic literature review and synthesis

Giacomo Parolin, Tim C. Mcaloone, Daniela C. A. Pigosso

Summary: Sustainability considerations are increasingly important for manufacturing companies, especially in the early stages of product design, to promote the development of products and processes with better environmental and social benefits. However, existing sustainability assessment tools are challenging to apply in the uncertain and data-scarce frontend of innovation. A systematic literature review provides best practices and design propositions to improve early-stage sustainability assessment, along with recommendations for designing and implementing sustainability assessment tools in technology development. Opportunities for future research, including refining the design propositions and operationalizing early-stage sustainability assessment, are also proposed.

Comparison of ethane recovery processes for lean gas based on a coupled model

Xing Liu, Qiuchen Wang, Yunhao Wen, Long Li, Xinfang Zhang, Yi Wang

Summary: This study analyzes the characteristics of process parameters in three lean gas ethane recovery processes and establishes a prediction and multiobjective optimization model for ethane recovery and system energy consumption. A new method for comparing ethane recovery processes for lean gas is proposed, and the addition of extra coolers improves the ethane recovery. The support vector regression model based on grey wolf optimization demonstrates the highest prediction accuracy, and the multiobjective multiverse optimization algorithm shows the best optimization performance and diversity in the solutions.

A novel deep-learning framework for short-term prediction of cooling load in public buildings

Cairong Song, Haidong Yang, Xian-Bing Meng, Pan Yang, Jianyang Cai, Hao Bao, Kangkang Xu

Summary: The paper proposes a novel deep learning-based prediction framework, aTCN-LSTM, for accurate cooling load predictions. The framework utilizes a gate-controlled multi-head temporal convolutional network and a sparse probabilistic self-attention mechanism with a bidirectional long short-term memory network to capture both temporal and long-term dependencies in the cooling load sequences. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method, which can serve as an effective guide for HVAC chiller scheduling and demand management initiatives.

Summary: This study uses survey data from the Loess Plateau in China to evaluate the impact of social interaction on the adoption of soil and water conservation (SWC) technology by farmers. The study finds that social interaction increases the likelihood of farmers adopting SWC, and internet use moderates this effect. The positive impact of social interaction on SWC adoption is more pronounced for farmers in larger villages and those who join cooperative societies.
