Constructed wetland systems have been used for treating a variety of household and industrial wastewater; they are a wastewater treatment technology that has high economic efficiency and environmental effectiveness, especially for sewage treatment in rural areas. Medium filler plays an important role in wetland sewage treatment processes. By carrying out a problem analysis of the ineffective operation and treatment of traditional wetlands, this paper designs different constructed wetland fillers to treat rural household sewage. Using the same plants, this paper chooses four different fillers, namely maifanite, steel slag, bamboo charcoal and limestone as substrates to build constructed wetland systems, and studies rural household sewage treatment in order to examine their effects on the degradation of pollutants. The results show the removal efficiencies obtain good effect. The theoretical maximum adsorption capacities of all these media are ordered as: maifanite > steel slag > bamboo charcoal > limestone. The effluent water quality meets the first class A standard of the Discharge standard of pollutants for municipal wastewater treatment plant (GB18918-2002). The selection of medium has an important significance for the operating results of constructed wetland sewage treatment systems. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Summary: The cities of China, as the largest CO2 emitting country, play a crucial role in mitigating global climate change. However, assessing their decarbonization levels using internationally recognized standards is challenging. In this study, a new emission database is developed to quantify urban emissions based on population density boundaries. The findings show significant differences in reported emissions based on different urban boundaries, a clustered pattern in China's urban CO2 emissions, and similarities in per capita emissions between China mega UB4 cities and OECD C40 cities.

Influential factors in agrarian households' engagement in rural tourism development

Wenbin Luo, Dallen J. Timothy, Chen Zhong, Xiaoling Zhang

Summary: This study applies Elinor Ostrom's Institutional Analysis and Development (IAD) extension model to understand the factors influencing agricultural households' decision to work in rural tourism in China. The study identifies five key variables: land consolidation, market characteristics, institutional arrangements, farming household's understanding of tourism, and household information. Binary logistic regression analysis reveals that market characteristics and cognition have direct positive influences on farmers' willingness to provide tourism services, while the source of household income has a negative influence. The study also finds no difference in risk assessment between farmers who work in tourism and those who do not, but significant differences in other factors. Finally, implications are provided for optimizing rural tourism development.

How does a scarcer allowance remake the carbon market? An evolutionary game analysis from the perspective of stakeholders

Xinyu Hao, Wen Sun, Xiaoling Zhang

Summary: The carbon market plays a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions, but its future direction is uncertain due to tighter carbon allowances. This study examines the operation mechanism of the carbon market from the stakeholders' perspective and suggests that the carbon market in China may become a major seller's market with dramatic reduction in carbon quota. It also highlights the impact of carbon productivity, administrative penalties, and information disclosure on the participation of carbon suppliers and buyers in the market, as well as the influence of carbon price and demand variation on their strategic interactions.

Polycentric governance in waste management: A mechanism analysis of actors' behavior evolution at the community level

Xinyu Hao, Liang Dong, Guangfu Liu, Xiaoling Zhang

Summary: This paper reveals the strategic coevolution mechanism of polycentric waste governance's main stakeholders at the community level through evolutionary game theory. The study shows that the recycler ultimately chooses active participation, while the community and householders are hesitant. Transmission effects exist in the interactions among the three agents. The modeling analysis echoes the tragedy of the commons and market failure in the theoretical landscape of polycentric waste governance. Countermeasures such as community engagement, public perception, and innovative government-market cooperation mode deserve attention. By uncovering the 'black box' of the polycentric waste governance model, a better understanding of the strategic evolution mechanism of governance actors for improving the theory is obtained. The research findings are expected to enlighten the practice of polycentric waste governance and mitigate the dilemma of waste siege.

Hui Hu, Shuaizhou Xiong, Xiaoling Zhang, Shuzhou Liu, Lin Gu, Yuqi Zhu, Dongjin Xiang, Martin Skitmore

Summary: The social contact rate plays a significant role in the transmission of COVID-19, where higher social contact leads to more contagion cases. This study examined 18 countries with the highest number of confirmed cases in the first 200 days after the Wuhan lockdown. A General Dynamic Model was developed to simulate the epidemic under various restriction policies for 500 days since the outbreak. The findings showed that the probability of contagion ranged from 12.52% to 39.39%, and the social contact rates varied significantly among countries, from 18.21% to 96.00%. Developed economies had 3.5 times more effective restriction policies compared to developing economies. The study compared the effectiveness of different policies for disease prevention and discussed the impact of policy adjustment frequency for each country. The recommendation was to maintain the strictest restrictions or adopt alternating tightening and loosening measures, resulting in an average reduction of maximum active cases by 72.45% and 79.78%, respectively.
