Summary: Comparison studies on recovery outcomes in ischemic (IS) and hemorrhagic strokes (HS) have shown mixed results. In a retrospective observational study, it was found that HS patients were younger and had more severe clinical deficits compared to IS patients. However, functional status change at discharge did not significantly differ between the two stroke types, with age and initial stroke severity being main prognostic factors.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the issue and method for improving the length of stay for patients with severe acute ischemic stroke. The results showed that patients with prolonged length-of-stay were younger, mostly male, more likely to receive reperfusion therapy, and less likely to have an early do-not-resuscitate order if signed. Although there was a lower rate of in-hospital mortality, there was a higher proportion with severe functional disability among the survivors.

Summary: Gender differences in functional recovery after stroke at discharge from an intensive rehabilitation hospital were not significant, with women showing better recovery potential at higher ages.

Summary: This study described the length of stay for very preterm infants in 57 Chinese neonatal intensive care units and identified factors associated with the length of stay. The study found that the length of stay and corrected gestational age at discharge increased with decreasing gestational age, and significant variations in length of stay were observed among different hospitals. Further investigation and quality improvement in care practices were recommended due to the large variations independent of infant characteristics.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of surgical variables and complications on postoperative hospital length of stay (LOS) in patients with adult spinal deformity (ASD). Through a retrospective review of multicenter registry data, it was found that fusion length, use of major osteotomy, staged surgery, and severity of intervention for complications were significantly associated with LOS. Careful selection of surgical factors may help reduce hospital LOS following surgery for ASD.

Summary: An IONM alert associated with an arterial complication increases the odds of a new postoperative deficit significantly; however, if the alert is resolved before closure, the odds of a new deficit decrease significantly. Procedures using MEPs have slightly higher sensitivity but slightly lower specificity compared to those without MEPs.

Summary: Admitting patients with low-grade aSAH to a dedicated stroke unit may be a better alternative than initial admission to the ICU, with similar rates of in-hospital complications, length of stay, and long-term poor outcomes observed between the two groups.

Summary: This study proposes a federated machine learning-based model for predicting patients' length of stay (LOS) in hospitals. The model combines locally trained models from decentralized and heterogeneous hospital clients while maintaining data privacy. The findings show that the aggregated model with federated learning has more reliable predictive performance, and integrating more clients' parameters improves the model's performance.

Summary: The study found a direct association between adjusted hospital TOO rates and survival after high-risk cancer procedures. TOO can be used as a valid hospital metric to compare the overall quality of cancer care across hospitals.

Summary: This study analyzed the feasibility of PEEK cranioplasty compared to autologous cranioplasty. The results suggest that PEEK biomaterials may offer better complication outcomes and similar hospital length of stay in cranioplasty. Further research is needed to validate these findings.

Summary: There are differences in mortality rates for young adults with severe sepsis treated in pediatric intensive care units (PICUs) versus medical/surgical ICUs (MICUs/SICUs). However, there is no difference in length of stay. This variation in mortality is likely due to significant differences in the patient populations, including comorbidity status.

Summary: This study in Saudi Arabia found that COVID-19 was more common in males and Saudi nationals, with many patients having comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, and chronic cardiovascular disease. Invasive ventilation was identified as the strongest predictor of length of stay in the ICU, and comorbidities like chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and older age were significant risk factors associated with a poorer prognosis and longer hospital and ICU stays.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between hospital volume and in-hospital mortality rates in pancreatic surgery in Germany. The findings suggest that hospitals with lower procedure volume can still achieve high-quality care with mortality rates comparable to high-volume hospitals. Therefore, volume alone may not be an adequate measure for assessing individual hospital quality, and more sophisticated certification systems should be preferred.

Summary: In this study, the effectiveness of an inpatient APP in reducing hospital length of stay for urologic oncology patients was evaluated. The results showed that the presence of an inpatient APP significantly decreased the average hospital length of stay for all types of urologic oncology procedures.

Summary: This study described the economic burden of melanoma patients in Hunan province, China, and investigated the factors influencing hospitalization spending and length of stay in patients undergoing melanoma surgery. The findings showed that melanoma imposes a heavy economic burden on patients, with middle-aged men with melanoma on the limbs experiencing the highest financial burden.
