Summary: While numerous MPA have been created in recent decades, their effectiveness needs to be evaluated in the context of national biodiversity conservation policies and verified through local observations. Currently, the observations of local stakeholders are not considered in any MPA database. Adding local stakeholder perspectives to MPA databases is crucial for a better understanding of marine protection and can contribute to more effective MPAs.

Summary: Based on a field survey and content analysis, this study examines tourists' perceptions and expectations of Wuyishan National Park and discovers their limited understanding of the park's functions, diverse expectations of tourism and recreational activities, and the lack of information hindering their effective contribution to conservation. The study suggests that better publicity and closer interactions with stakeholders can enhance tourists' role in the governance of national parks.

Summary: Designating parts of forests as protected areas is crucial for conservation efforts, but the effectiveness varies depending on factors such as age of the park, suitability for agriculture, and level of protection. A low level of forest cover outside a protected area can serve as an early warning sign of potential future forest loss within the area, allowing for proactive conservation measures to be implemented.

Summary: As marine protected areas (MPAs) face various coastal threats, including development, their incorporation into integrated coastal management (ICM) is essential. Stakeholder participation is a major, albeit poorly addressed, component of the integration of MPAs into ICM. Stakeholders can signal when coastal activities become unacceptable according to good governance principles of MPAs and ICM.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance and governance of small-scale fisheries in 20 countries in the Americas and Europe, identifying concerning trends such as declining catches and social cohesion. Factors such as adaptability, communication, transparency, and involvement of skilled fishers and community leaders were found to be crucial in reversing the declines in small-scale fisheries. Strengthening human capital and adopting flexible approaches in governance are strongly recommended to support sustainable small-scale fisheries.

Summary: This study examines the challenges and opportunities of sustainable tourism development in Special Environmental Protected Areas (SPAs) through a case study of the Datca-Bozburun Peninsula. It uses a mixed method approach and draws on social exchange theory and the triple bottom line approach. The study explores the economic, sociocultural, and environmental impacts of tourism on destination development stages, and investigates their effects on tourism support. The findings suggest that while economic, social, and cultural impacts influence tourism support, environmental impact does not. The study also highlights the shift from nature-based tourism with foreigners to mass tourism with locals in Datca, driven by low interest in water sports among local tourists and insufficient promotion.

Summary: The study in Brazilian MPAs found that environmental threats are primarily categorized as overexploitation, urbanization, and land use threats, with overexploitation being strongly associated with extreme poverty in local communities near MPAs. Threats were more prevalent in EPA MPAs in Brazil, with concentrations along the North and Southeast coasts of the country. Data from news media can be useful for qualitative assessment of threats but has limitations in quantification, highlighting the need for policymakers and MPA managers to consider social inequalities in managing and governing MPAs effectively.

Summary: Protected areas (PAs) can effectively slow down the decline of terrestrial vertebrate populations, with amphibians and birds benefiting the most. However, the effectiveness of PAs varies across regions and vertebrate classes. Good governance and targeted protection are crucial for optimizing the PA network.

Summary: This study examines the attitudes of stakeholders towards Tara National Park in Serbia and identifies the factors that shape these attitudes. The findings reveal conflicts between the park and the local population, with the community prioritizing tourism and the park leaders and visitors emphasizing protection and conservation. There is also divided opinion among the local population regarding the importance of the park as a national heritage. Visitors strongly support tourism development and activities following nature protection principles.

Summary: Protected areas are designated to safeguard specific areas with natural and cultural values, and appropriate management is essential for their conservation goals. In China, the inefficiency of the current management system and a lack of relevant laws pose challenges for staff conducting conservation activities. The establishment of the National Park Administration could be a potential solution, along with the formulation of relevant laws and funding systems to support the success of management staff and protected areas.

Summary: Protected areas (PAs) rely on the involvement and support of local people for their success. In rural and urban communities in Ghana, people have different knowledge, perceptions, and attitudes towards nearby PAs. Despite some differences, most local residents have positive attitudes towards PAs.

Summary: This article examines the conflict over forest use in modern Greece. It highlights the clash between foresters, who championed the importance of timber, and those involved in animal husbandry, who relied on forests as grazing grounds. The study also reveals the involvement of various societal and political actors in this century-long struggle. It shows how the framing of goats and goat rearing as symbols of deforestation and underdevelopment, both economically and culturally, played a significant role in shaping the fate of goats in Greek forests.
