This study assesses the operation of Greek protected areas and evaluates to what extent stakeholders believe that good environmental governance criteria are met. Using Q-methodology, the study identifies four main perspectives among the stakeholders. The findings suggest that overall, the management of Greek protected areas does not strongly meet the criteria of good environmental governance, particularly in terms of shared vision, the rule of law, and the effectiveness/efficiency of procedures.
In this paper, we are interested in assessing the Greek protected areas' (PAs) operation, and in particular, to what extent the stakeholders engaged in their management consider that the good environmental governance criteria are met. Through the use of Q-methodology, we find that, despite the very different circumstances of each PA, the stakeholders' views cluster around four distinctive main perspectives (or factors). Furthermore, we find that stakeholders do not consider, overall, that the Greek PAs management strongly meets any of the good environmental governance criteria, with particularly poor assessments on crucial governance aspects such as a shared vision guiding the PA management, the rule of law, and the effectiveness/efficiency of the procedures, which suggests that the environmental governance of Greek PAs is suboptimal at least.

Summary: This paper examines the different environmental security concepts, policies, and actions of actors involved in the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP). Findings indicate a divergence between announced strategies and policies related to environmental and climate security and their actual results. Tailored environmental security policies and actions are needed to address security challenges associated with environmental issues and climate change.

THE WAR ON THE GOAT: FORESTRY, HUSBANDRY AND POLITICS IN EARLY MODERN GREECE

Giorgos Kostopoulos, Iosif Botetzagias

Summary: This article examines the conflict over forest use in modern Greece. It highlights the clash between foresters, who championed the importance of timber, and those involved in animal husbandry, who relied on forests as grazing grounds. The study also reveals the involvement of various societal and political actors in this century-long struggle. It shows how the framing of goats and goat rearing as symbols of deforestation and underdevelopment, both economically and culturally, played a significant role in shaping the fate of goats in Greek forests.

Summary: The overview of forest management in the Kingdom of Greece from 1830 to 1880 shows that despite legislative efforts, the government lacked resources to enforce protective measures, leading to conflicts with traditional forest uses of rural populations and ultimately causing the retreat of Greek forests during this period.
