The impact of UV-B radiation on invertebrate immune function is largely unknown, but it has been found to impair insect immune response and make them more susceptible to infection with important pathogens.

Summary: The study investigated local vector biology and characterized metagenomic arbovirus diversity in Aedes mosquitoes during the ongoing 2015/2016 ZIKV epidemic. Aedes aegypti appeared to be the likely vector of ZIKV, with the detection of two different ZIKV genotypes, including a novel one, through arbovirus sequence enrichment of metagenomic DNA preparations. The new approach presented in this study may be useful for identifying epidemic-causing arboviruses and collecting phylogenetic information on their source.

Summary: The rapid increase in incidence and prevalence of dengue virus serotype 2 (DENV-2) in recent decades has necessitated a better understanding of the selective pressures driving genetic and phenotypic changes in this virus. In this study, DENV-2 was horizontally transmitted between suckling mice and Aedes aegypti mosquitoes to simulate virus transfer between human hosts and mosquito vectors. Three cycles of alternating transmission and three passages of virus population were performed, with viral titers and infectivity to mosquitoes tested. The genome of the viruses was also sequenced. Results showed similar viral titers and no significant difference in mosquito infection rates among the three passages. This in vivo model can be used to explore virus evolution and genetic variance in alternating transmission.
