Summary: By treating the surfaces of polystyrene and polyamide 12 with O-2 plasma, the number of polar groups capable of hydrogen bond formation was increased, allowing for the joining of incompatible substrates without adhesive by pressing them together. The adhesion strength increased with bonding temperature and both substrates being plasma-treated, reaching adhesive strengths up to 5.5 +/- 1.7 MPa. Additionally, the joint substrates could be rapidly de-bonded on demand simply by treatment with water, and re-bonded by renewed plasma treatment.

Summary: This study aims to develop a PLA-based material with well-balanced stiffness and toughness to overcome the brittleness issue of commercial grade PLA. Composites were prepared by blending PLA with increasing contents of TPU and a fixed concentration of CFs, which were acid-treated to enhance the interfacial adhesion. The results showed improved tensile modulus, maximum stress, and elongation at break, demonstrating the effectiveness of this approach in preparing novel PLA-based materials with tailorable properties.

Summary: UV-absorbing and non-fogging glass coatings with carbazole-based conjugated backbone and different lengths of hydrophilic PEG subunit (KP-PEG) were prepared. The polymers were characterized using FT-IR, 1H NMR, GPC, TGA and DSC. Transmittance and thin-film morphology were analyzed through UV-Vis absorption, AFM and TEM techniques. The wettability and antifogging properties of the coatings depended on the length of PEG in the polymer subunit, with water contact angle ranging from 60 degrees to 29 degrees. KP-PEG750 exhibited the highest roughness, optimum UV absorption, and lowest contact angle value, making it the best polymer thin film.

Summary: This study presents the synthesis of a new class of antifouling polymer brushes based on highly hydrophilic sulfoxide polymers using surface-initiated PET-RAFT polymerization. The sulfoxide polymer brushes show outstanding antifouling properties in reducing nonspecific adsorption of proteins and cells, offering a general approach to engineering material surfaces with antifouling properties for biomedical applications.

Summary: Interfaces between minerals and water are crucial in various geochemical and industrial processes, with MgO serving as a valuable model system due to its simple cubic structure. Vibrational sum frequency generation (vSFG) spectroscopy and water contact angle (WCA) measurements on MgO single crystal surfaces reveal detailed molecular interactions between water molecules and hydroxylated MgO surfaces. Despite their hydrophilicity, MgO surfaces exhibit unique non-H-bonded OH stretching vibrations and interactions with water that are not fully captured by traditional WCA measurements.

Summary: By using PAA-catalyzed in-situ COF synthesis method to apply COF-PAA modifier on PVDF membranes, the water flux, rejection rate, and antifouling properties can be improved, with a reduced leaching rate of PAA. The tight bonding of COF to PAA on the membrane surface contributes to enhanced stability and antifouling properties.

Summary: Dissipative particle dynamics simulations were used to investigate the self-assembly of polymeric coatings. The results showed that the amphiphilic di-block co-polymer played a crucial role in controlling the assembly of the coating structure. Moreover, the polymer chemistry and the presence of excess stabilizer in the solution affected the quality of the coating.
