Cerebral Glucose Metabolism is Associated with Verbal but not Visual Memory Performance in Community-Dwelling Older Adults

Increasing evidence suggests that Alzheimer's disease (AD) sufferers show region-specific reductions in cerebral glucose metabolism, as measured by [P-18]-fluoro-2-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography (F-18-FDG PET). We investigated preclinical disease stage by cross-sectionally examining the association between global cognition, verbal and visual memory, and F-18-FDG PET standardized uptake value ratio (SUVR) in 43 healthy control individuals, subsequently focusing on differences between subjective memory complainers and non-memory complainers. The F-18-FDG PET regions of interest investigated include the hippocampus, amygdala, posterior cingulate, superior parietal, entorhinal cortices, frontal cortex, temporal cortex, and inferior parietal region. In the cohort as a whole, verbal logical memory immediate recall was positively associated with F-18-FDG PET SUVR in both the left hippocampus and right amygdala. There were no associations observed between global cognition, delayed recall in logical memory, or visual reproduction and F-18-FDG PET SUVR. Following stratification of the cohort into subjective memory complainers and non-complainers, verbal logical memory immediate recall was positively associated with F-18-FDG PET SUVR in the right amygdala in those with subjective memory complaints. There were no significant associations observed in non-memory complainers between F-18-FDG PET SUVR in regions of interest and cognitive performance. We observed subjective memory complaint-specific associations between F-18-FDG PET SUVR and immediate verbal memory performance in our cohort, however found no associations between delayed recall of verbal memory performance or visual memory performance. It is here argued that the neural mechanisms underlying verbal and visual memory performance may in fact differ in their pathways, and the characteristic reduction of F-18-FDG PET SUVR observed in this and previous studies likely reflects the pathophysiological changes in specific brain regions that occur in preclinical AD.

Assessing Alexithymia across Asian and Western Cultures: Psychometric Properties of the Perth Alexithymia Questionnaire and Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20 in Singaporean and Australian Samples

Summary: This study examines the cross-cultural validity and application of the alexithymia construct by assessing the psychometric properties and measurement invariance of two alexithymia measures, the Perth Alexithymia Questionnaire (PAQ) and Toronto Alexithymia Scale-20 (TAS-20), in samples from Singapore and Australia. The results suggest that both measures have good utility and support the validity of the alexithymia construct across cultures, although the PAQ may provide a more detailed facet-level profile. The findings also highlight differences in the experience of positive emotions between the Singaporean and Australian samples.

Tau and amyloid biomarkers modify the degree to which cognitive reserve and brain reserve predict cognitive decline

Summary: The study found that brain reserve and cognitive reserve can predict slower decline in executive function in older adults. When Alzheimer's disease pathology is low, only brain reserve can attenuate decline. Education is not independently associated with cognitive decline.

The relationship between objective physical activity and change in cognitive function

Summary: This study examined the association between objectively measured physical activity and cognition in older adults over 8 years. The results showed that higher energy expenditure, physical activity intensity, and total activity were associated with better episodic recall memory and global cognition. These findings suggest that physical activity may preserve cognitive function, with activity intensity playing a significant role.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the effects of medium-chain fatty acid (MCFA) supplementation on circulating ketone bodies and cognition in individuals with cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease. The results showed that MCFA supplementation increases blood ketone levels and enhances brain energy metabolism. However, the effects on cognition varied and further research is needed to determine if MCFA-mediated increase in brain energy metabolism can improve cognition.

Does Gesture Improve the Communication Success of People with Aphasia?: A Systematic Review

Summary: This study assessed the impact of gesture on the communication success of people with aphasia through a systematic review. The results showed that gesture can improve the communication success of people with aphasia beyond spoken language alone. However, the severity of apraxia can hinder the effectiveness of gesture, while aphasia severity and semantic processing deficits do not have a significant impact.

The influence of baseline sleep on exercise-induced cognitive change in cognitively unimpaired older adults: A randomised clinical trial
