Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is a globally distributed disease caused primarily by Candida albicans. Diagnosis should be based on clinical examination and laboratory investigations. Treatment regimen should be individualized based on patient conditions and causative agents.
Aim To provide an overview of clinical, immunological, and mycological aspects of vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC). Methods A literature search was conducted to find relevant articles about different aspects of VVC. Related data from retrieved articles were summarized in different headings. Results VVC has a global distribution and Candida albicans is the leading cause of infection except for specific patient groups like postmenopausal, diabetic, or immunocompromised women. VVC has a range of clinical presentations, accordingly, its diagnosis should be based on clinical examination coupled with laboratory investigations. The best therapeutic regimen depends on the patient's conditions and the causative agent. Moreover, factors like drug resistance of the causative agents and different mutations in the immunity-related genes could affect the treatment outcome. Conclusion As a globally distributed disease, VVC needs further attention, especially in areas related to the treatment failure and recurrence of the disease.

Restricting tumor lactic acid metabolism using dichloroacetate improves T cell functions

Hosein Rostamian, Mohammad Khakpoor-Koosheh, Leila Jafarzadeh, Elham Masoumi, Keyvan Fallah-Mehrjardi, Mohammad Javad Tavassolifar, John M. Pawelek, Hamid Reza Mirzaei, Jamshid Hadjati

Summary: Lactic acid produced by tumors can suppress the activation and function of T cells in the tumor microenvironment, while Dichloroacetate (DCA) can limit the tumor-derived lactic acid and improve T cell proliferation and cytokine production. Accumulation of lactic acid in the tumor microenvironment restricts T cell responses and DCA supports anti-tumor responses of T cells by metabolic reprogramming of tumor cells.

Anti-biofilm properties of eucalyptol in combination with antifungals against Candida albicans isolates in patients with hematological malignancy

Mahyar Keymaram, Mehraban Falahati, Shirin Farahyar, Ensieh Lotfali, Sara Abolghasemi, Shahram Mahmoudi, Fatemeh Sadeghi, Halala Khalandi, Reza Ghasemi, Sina Shamsaei, Omid Raiesi

Summary: Oral candidiasis, mainly caused by Candida albicans, is prevalent among hematologic malignancy patients. Eucalyptol, either alone or in combination with antifungal drugs, shows promising inhibitory activity against Candida biofilm formation.

Black aspergilli as causes of otomycosis in the era of molecular diagnostics, a mini-review

Hasti Kamali Sarvestani, Amirreza Seifi, Mahsa Falahatinejad, Shahram Mahmoudi

Summary: Otomycosis is a fungal infection that primarily affects the external auditory canal. The main causes of this disease are Aspergillus species and Candida. Recent studies have shown that Aspergillus section Nigri comprises multiple morphologically similar species, and not all black Aspergillus isolates are Aspergillus niger.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the clinical features and predisposing factors of fungal keratitis (FK) in Tehran, Iran. The fungal etiology of corneal ulcers was confirmed in 7.23% of cases, with Fusarium spp., Aspergillus spp., and Candida spp. being the predominant species. The study also found that different antifungal agents may be effective in treating FK caused by different fungal species.
