The effect of titanium carbide and titanium diboride additions on the structure and properties of chromium carbide-based composite coatings produced by the nonvacuum electron-beam cladding process have been studied. The results show that the addition of these modifiers facilitates the transformation of the Fe phase and contributes to the formation of a finer grained structure. The mechanical properties of the composite coatings, including microhardness and wear resistance, were significantly improved compared to the modifier-free chromium carbide-based coating.
The effect of titanium carbide and titanium diboride additions on the structure and properties of chromium carbide-based composite coatings produced by the nonvacuum electron-beam cladding process have been studied. The results demonstrate that the addition of the modifiers facilitates the alpha -> gamma transformation of the Fe in the coatings. The titanium carbide and titanium diboride particles act as crystallization centers and contribute to the formation of a finer grained structure during melt cooling. The addition of titanium carbide and titanium diboride to the powder mixture for the cladding process has been shown to improve the mechanical properties of the composite coatings: the average microhardness increased from 4.12 to 6.23 GPa and the wear resistance was nine to ten times that of a modifier-free chromium carbide-based coating.
