Associations between Dietary Animal and Plant Protein Intake and Cardiometabolic Risk Factors-A Cross-Sectional Study in China Health and Nutrition Survey

Shuangli Meng, Zhixin Cui, Minjuan Li, Ting Li, Feng Wu, Tong Kang, Huicui Meng

Summary: This study found that substituting animal protein for carbohydrates in Chinese adults was positively associated with some cardiometabolic risk factors, while substituting plant protein for carbohydrates was inversely associated with these factors. Associations varied in subgroup analyses, suggesting potential benefits of plant protein over animal protein on cardiometabolic health.

Associations between Dietary Glycemic Index and Glycemic Load Values and Cardiometabolic Risk Factors in Adults: Findings from the China Health and Nutrition Survey

Minjuan Li, Zhixin Cui, Shuangli Meng, Ting Li, Tong Kang, Qi Ye, Mengting Cao, Yuxin Bi, Huicui Meng

Summary: The study found that dietary glycemic load (GL) rather than glycemic index (GI) is associated with cardiometabolic risk factors among Chinese adults, with higher GL values positively correlated with increased prevalence of hyperuricemia and hypercholesterolemia. Further research is needed to confirm the public health implications of these findings.

Gpx4, Selenov, and Txnrd3 Are Three Most Testis-Abundant Selenogenes Resistant to Dietary Selenium Concentrations and Actively Expressed During Reproductive Ages in Rats

Aiping Liu, Fengna Li, Ping Xu, Yanmei Chen, Xiongshun Liang, Shijie Zheng, Huicui Meng, Yumei Zhu, Junluan Mo, Chunmei Gong, Ji-Chang Zhou

Summary: The study investigated the mRNA expressions of testis-abundant selenogenes in response to different dietary selenium concentrations in rat models. The results showed that Gpx4, Selenov, and Txnrd3 were highly expressed in the testis, especially during reproductive ages, and were resistant to changes in dietary selenium levels.

Four-Week Supplementation of Water-Soluble Tomato Extract Attenuates Platelet Function in Chinese Healthy Middle-Aged and Older Individuals: A Randomized, Double-Blinded, and Crossover Clinical Trial

Zezhong Tian, Die Fan, Kongyao Li, Dan Zhao, Ying Liang, Qiuhua Ji, Xiaoli Gao, Xilin Ma, Yimin Zhao, Yuheng Mao, Huicui Meng, Yan Yang

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of water-soluble tomato extract (WTE) on platelet function in Chinese healthy middle-aged and older individuals, as well as the safety of 4-week WTE supplementation. The results showed that WTE supplementation for 4 weeks could moderately reduce platelet activation, aggregation, and granule secretion, and these effects are safe. Furthermore, a 2-week washout period is sufficient to eliminate the inhibitory effect of 4-week WTE supplementation on platelet function.

Outness and its correlates among gay and bisexual men attending university in China: a cross-sectional study

Yuqing Hu, Song Fan, Peiyang Li, Hongbo Jiang, Yinguang Fan, Tanwei Yuan, Xinyi Zhou, Yanxiao Gao, Leiwen Fu, Yuewei Zhan, Huicui Meng, Yawen Jiang, Jinqiu Yuan, Xiaojun Meng, Huachun Zou

Summary: This study investigated the disclosure of sexual orientation among gay and bisexual men attending university in China and examined factors associated with disclosure. The results showed that men who served as student leaders and donated blood were more likely to disclose their sexual orientation, while men who had sex with a female and engaged in group sex were less likely to disclose. Mental health status and HIV/STI infections were not found to be associated with disclosure.

Associations between Conventional and Emerging Indicators of Dietary Carbohydrate Quality and New-Onset Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Chinese Adults

Zhixin Cui, Man Wu, Ke Liu, Yin Wang, Tong Kang, Shuangli Meng, Huicui Meng

Summary: A study found that dietary glycemic index (GI), carbohydrate to fiber ratio (CF), and carbohydrate quality index (CQI) are associated with the risk of new-onset type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among Chinese adults. The study examined 14,590 adults without cardiometabolic diseases and found U-shaped associations between dietary GI and CF with T2DM risk. The study also found inverse associations between CQI and T2DM risk in younger participants or those with a higher level of education.

Diets Enriched in Sugar, Refined, or Whole Grain Differentially Influence Plasma Cholesterol Concentrations and Cholesterol Metabolism Pathways with Concurrent Changes in Bile Acid Profile and Gut Microbiota Composition in ApoE-/- Mice

Haiyan Zhou, Ke Liu, Wenjing Liu, Man Wu, Yin Wang, Yiqian Lv, Huicui Meng

Summary: This study compared the effects of diets enriched in sugar, refined grain (RG), or whole grain (WG) on cholesterol concentrations and related mechanisms. The results showed that sugar and RG diets increased plasma LDL-C and HDL-C concentrations, and decreased intestinal LXR-alpha gene expression compared to WG diet. Sugar diet increased plasma TC, non-HDL-C, TG, VLDL-C concentrations, and cecal lithocholic acid concentrations, and decreased intestinal ABCG5 gene expression; RG diet increased hepatic IDOL gene expression and cecal lithocholic and deoxycholic acid concentrations. The changes in gut microbiota were associated with cholesterol metabolism and bile acid concentrations.

Supplementation with Natto and Red Yeast Rice Alters Gene Expressions in Cholesterol Metabolism Pathways in ApoE-/- Mice with Concurrent Changes in Gut Microbiota

Haiyan Zhou, Wenjing Liu, Yiqian Lv, Ke Liu, Yin Wang, Shuangli Meng, Tong Kang, Yuechao Bao, Huicui Meng

Summary: This study investigated the effects of natto and red yeast rice (NR) supplementation on lipid and lipoprotein profiles, gene expressions of cholesterol metabolism, and gut microbiota composition in ApoE(-/-) mice. The results showed that NR supplementation had no significant impact on lipid and lipoprotein profiles, but HFD + NR group exhibited increased mRNA expressions of HMGCR, CYP7A1, and ABCA1, decreased mRNA expression of PCSK9, lowered fasting glucose concentrations, and decreased abundance of genera Bacteroides and Lactococcus as well as Coriobacteriaceae_UCG-002. These findings suggest that NR supplementation may affect cholesterol metabolism gene expressions through changes in gut microbiota.

Summary: This study revealed the frequency, diversity, and specificity of antibody immune responses following SARS-CoV-2 infection using the LIBRA-seq technology. The results showed that a specific memory B cell subgroup in convalescent COVID-19 patients had a higher proportion of SARS-CoV-2 antigen-labeled cells, and public antibody clonotypes were shared by distinct individuals. Additionally, antibodies isolated by LIBRA-seq exhibited high binding affinity and neutralizing activities against SARS-CoV-2.
