The rapid spread of new pathogens, such as the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has significant impacts on global public health and the global economy. Implementing new safety regulations effectively is crucial for controlling the spread of COVID-19 and influencing the health behavior of social groups. Some effective treatments, like ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine, were dismissed without clear reasons. Various measures are being taken worldwide to inhibit the development of the virus, and sodium selenite shows promise in reducing the incidence of COVID-19.
The rapid spread of new pathogens (SARS-CoV-2 virus) that negatively affect the human body has huge consequences for the global public health system and the development of the global economy. Appropriate implementation of new safety regulations will improve the functioning of the current model supervising the inhibition of the spread of COVID-19 disease. Compliance with all these standards will have a key impact on the health behavior of individual social groups. There have been demonstrably effective treatments that proved to be effective but were rapidly dismissed for unknown reasons, such as ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine. Various measures are used in the world to help inhibit its development. The properties of this element provide hope in preventing the development of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The aim of this review is to synthesize the latest literature data and to present the effect of sodium selenite in reducing the incidence of COVID-19 disease.

Reprocessing of side-streams towards obtaining valuable bacterial metabolites

Kamil Piwowarek, Edyta Lipinska, Marek Kieliszek

Summary: Every year, the industry generates large amounts of residues worldwide. These residues are often disposed of through methods such as landfills, incineration, or discharge into sewage, which are not ideal. This article discusses the latest achievements in biotechnology regarding bacterial reprocessing of residues to obtain valuable metabolites. The focus is on four metabolites - bacterial cellulose, propionic acid, vitamin B12, and PHAs. Considering global trends, there will likely be a significant increase in demand for these compounds in the near future. Cheap methods for their production need to be developed for profitability and commercialization. The article also covers factors affecting production, metabolic pathways, and potential and current applications, providing a comprehensive overview useful for academia, scientific communities, and industries.

Characterization of Aloe Vera Gel-Based Edible Coating with Orange Peel Essential Oil and Its Preservation Effects on Button Mushroom (Agaricus bisporus)

A. Shenbagam, Nishant Kumar, Kumar Rahul, Ashutosh Upadhyay, Malgorzata Gniewosz, Marek Kieliszek

Summary: This study investigated the effects of orange peel essential oils on the properties of aloe vera gel-based edible coating. The effects of the coating (with or without incorporation of orange peel essential oil) on the shelf life and characteristics of button mushrooms during storage were also studied. The results showed that the 50% concentration of aloe vera gel-based coating without essential oil had superior properties and could maintain the quality of mushrooms throughout storage. The highest concentration of orange peel essential oil significantly improved the postharvest quality of mushrooms and extended their shelf life.

Natural pigments: Anthocyanins, carotenoids, chlorophylls, and betalains as colorants in food products

Brera Ghulam Nabi, Kinza Mukhtar, Waqar Ahmed, Muhammad Faisal Manzoor, Muhammad Modassar Ali Nawaz Ranjha, Marek Kieliszek, Zuhaib F. Bhat, Rana Muhammad Aadil

Summary: Natural pigments are widely used in food to provide color and improve taste. They are important in the food industry due to their nutritional and functional attributes. Consumers are increasingly interested in natural pigments as they are considered safer than artificial pigments. Some permitted natural pigments include betalains, flavonoids, carotenoids, and chlorophylls. However, there are restrictions on their use based on the source, quantity, and nature of the product. This review highlights the applications and advantages of permitted pigments in various food models.

Physiological and genetic regulation of anhydrobiosis in yeast cells

Wioletta Sek, Anna M. Kot, Alexander Rapoport, Marek Kieliszek

Summary: Anhydrobiosis is a state in which the metabolism of living organisms is temporarily delayed or suspended due to dehydration. The viability of yeast cells during the drying process depends on rehydration. Various cellular structures and compounds, such as the cell wall, vacuoles, mitochondria, trehalose, and lipid droplets, play important roles in anhydrobiosis. Additionally, specific proteins and genes are responsible for this process.

New insights into the anticancer therapeutic potential of maytansine and its derivatives

Sameen Zafar, Muhammad Armaghan, Khushbukhat Khan, Nazia Hassan, Javad Sharifi-Rad, Solomon Habtemariam, Marek Kieliszek, Monica Butnariu, Iulia-Cristina Bagiu, Radu Vasile Bagiu, William C. Cho

Summary: Maytansine is an active drug derived from medicinal plants and microorganisms. Its pharmacological activities primarily include anticancer and antibacterial effects. The anticancer mechanism of maytansine is achieved through interaction with tubulin, inhibiting microtubule assembly and leading to cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. However, its non-selective cytotoxicity limits its clinical applications. Researchers have developed derivatives of maytansine with improved pharmacological activities. This review provides valuable insights into maytansine and its synthetic derivatives as anticancer agents.

The importance of selenium in food enrichment processes. A comprehensive review

Marek Kieliszek, Sayra N. Serrano Sandoval

Summary: Selenium is a crucial element for the proper functioning of human and animal organisms, and its content in food varies depending on the region and soil conditions. Proper diet selection is the main source of selenium supplementation, especially in areas with selenium deficiency. Insufficient selenium intake can lead to negative health effects and potentially life-threatening diseases. Therefore, it is important to develop methods for supplementing selenium in regions with low selenium content.
