Understanding human activity patterns plays a key role in various applications in an urban environment, such as transportation planning and traffic forecasting, urban planning, public health and safety, and emergency response. Most existing studies in modeling human activity patterns mainly focus on spatio-temporal dimensions, which lacks consideration of underlying semantic context. In fact, what people do and discuss at some places, inferring what is happening at the places, cannot be simple neglected because it is the root of human mobility patterns. We believe that the geo-tagged semantic context, representing what individuals do and discuss at a place and a specific time, drives a formation of specific human activity pattern. In this paper, we aim to model human activity patterns not only based on space and time but also with consideration of associated semantics, and attempt to prove a hypothesis that similar mobility patterns may have different motivations. We develop a spatiotemporal-semantic model to quantitatively express human activity patterns based on topic models, leading to an analysis of space, time and semantics. A case study is conducted using Twitter data in Toronto based on our model. Through computing the similarities between users in terms of spatiotemporal pattern, semantic pattern and spatiotemporal-semantic pattern, we find that only a small number of users (2.72%) have very similar activity patterns, while the majority (87.14%) show different activity patterns (i.e., similar spatiotemporal patterns and different semantic patterns, similar semantic patterns and different spatiotemporal patterns, or different in both). The population of users that has very similar activity patterns is decreased by 56.41% after incorporating semantic information in the corresponding spatiotemporal patterns, which can quantitatively prove the hypothesis. Evaluating spatial accessibility to healthcare services from the lens of emergency hospital visits based on floating car data

Wei Jiao, Wei Huang, Hongchao Fan

Summary: Public medical facilities are crucial in sustainable urban planning. This study presents a method to examine night emergency hospital visit and analyze its characteristics using float car data. It improves the 2SFCA methodology to calculate hospital accessibility and analyzes the balance between accessibility and population density. The study also investigates the relationship between hospital choice preferences and hospital level.

An unmixing-based spatial downscaling fusion approach for the MODIS evapotranspiration product

Han Lu, Wei Huang, Yongnian Zeng, Pancheng Wang, Xinyu Pi, Wenjie Liu

Summary: In this study, an unmixing-based spatial downscaling approach was proposed to convert the spatial resolution of the MOD16 ET product from 500 m to 16 m, in order to meet the needs of local-scale water management and environmental change research. The experimental results showed that the downscaled ET data had higher spatial details and exhibited high correlation and less error when compared with the MOD16 ET product and in situ ET measurements.

Revealing Dynamic Spatial Structures of Urban Mobility Networks and the Underlying Evolutionary Patterns

Chun Liu, Li Chen, Quan Yuan, Hangbin Wu, Wei Huang

Summary: Urban space exhibits rich and diverse organizational structures, and understanding these structures and how urban systems work is crucial. Existing methods often overlook the temporal dimension and oversimplify spatial heterogeneity, making it challenging to address these complex properties. Therefore, we propose a framework based on temporal networks for modeling dynamic urban mobility structures and verify its effectiveness through empirical analysis.

Characterizing Production-Living-Ecological Space Evolution and Its Driving Factors: A Case Study of the Chaohu Lake Basin in China from 2000 to 2020

Ruyi Zhang, Songnian Li, Baojing Wei, Xu Zhou

Summary: The division of the territorial space functional area is the primary method for studying the rational exploitation and use of land space. This study analyzes the temporal changes and evolution features of the Production-Living-Ecological Space (PLES) landscape pattern in the Chaohu Lake Basin. It identifies the driving factors and concludes that agricultural production space dominates the landscape, with the natural climate, population structure of agricultural development, and industrial structure of economic development being the main drivers of PLES change. It suggests carrying out land regulation based on natural factors, economic development, and national policies to promote the formation of a territorial space development pattern.

Joint Task Offloading and Resource Allocation for Vehicular Edge Computing Based on V2I and V2V Modes

Wenhao Fan, Yi Su, Jie Liu, Shenmeng Li, Wei Huang, Fan Wu, Yuan'an Liu

Summary: In this paper, a joint task offloading and resource allocation scheme is proposed to minimize the total task processing delay of all the vehicles in a vehicular edge computing (VEC) system. The scheme considers task diversity, vehicle classification, and task processing flexibility. An algorithm based on Generalized Benders Decomposition (GBD) and Reformulation Linearization (RL) methods is designed to optimally solve the optimization problem, and a heuristic algorithm is also designed for sub-optimal solution with low computational complexity. Extensive simulations demonstrate the superiority of the proposed scheme compared to 4 other schemes.

Open HD map service model: an interoperable high-Definition map data model for autonomous driving

Fengyuan Zhang, Wenzhong Shi, Min Chen, Wei Huang, Xintao Liu

Summary: Autonomous driving has gained attention and demand due to the growth in the vehicle industry. High-definition maps (HD maps) are considered crucial infrastructure for autonomous driving, but the heterogeneous nature of HD map data makes it challenging to meet all driving objectives. To address this, the Open HD Map Service Model (OHDMSM) is proposed as an interoperable map data model to facilitate HD map development. A proof of concept HD map data system is implemented following the designed data model and interfaces of OHDMSM, providing benefits for worldwide HD map data requesting, updating, and interoperation in support of autonomous driving and intelligent transportation.
