Accurate cropland information is of paramount importance for crop monitoring. This study compares five existing cropland mapping methodologies over five contrasting Joint Experiment for Crop Assessment and Monitoring (JECAM) sites of medium to large average field size using the time series of 7-day 250m Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) mean composites (red and near-infrared channels). Different strategies were devised to assess the accuracy of the classification methods: confusion matrices and derived accuracy indicators with and without equalizing class proportions, assessing the pairwise difference error rates and accounting for the spatial resolution bias. The robustness of the accuracy with respect to a reduction of the quantity of calibration data available was also assessed by a bootstrap approach in which the amount of training data was systematically reduced. Methods reached overall accuracies ranging from 85% to 95%, which demonstrates the ability of 250m imagery to resolve fields down to 20ha. Despite significantly different error rates, the site effect was found to persistently dominate the method effect. This was confirmed even after removing the share of the classification due to the spatial resolution of the satellite data (from 10% to 30%). This underlines the effect of other agrosystems characteristics such as cloudiness, crop diversity, and calendar on the ability to perform accurately. All methods have potential for large area cropland mapping as they provided accurate results with 20% of the calibration data, e.g. 2% of the study area in Ukraine. To better address the global cropland diversity, results advocate movement towards a set of cropland classification methods that could be applied regionally according to their respective performance in specific landscapes.

Summary: Research in global change ecology often relies on global climatic grids, which may not accurately reflect temperature conditions below vegetation canopies and near the ground surface. This study provides global maps of soil temperature at different depths, highlighting the significant differences between soil and air temperature. These maps are valuable for ecological applications, but further improvement in spatiotemporal resolution is needed.

Summary: The correction of atmospheric effects is crucial for remote sensing applications. A benchmark exercise called ACIX was conducted to assess the performance of different atmospheric correction methods. The results showed that the processors were successful in retrieving aerosol optical depth and water vapor retrievals, but there was still a need for better assessment of uncertainties in surface reflectance retrievals.

Unlocking Large-Scale Crop Field Delineation in Smallholder Farming Systems with Transfer Learning and Weak Supervision

Sherrie Wang, Francois Waldner, David B. Lobell

Summary: Crop field boundaries are important for mapping crop types, predicting yields, and analyzing field-scale data. This study addresses the challenges of limited field boundary datasets in smallholder systems by using high-resolution satellite imagery and transfer learning with weak supervision. The results show that the approach is effective in delineating crop fields in regions without existing field boundary datasets.

Summary: Intraspecific variability (IV) plays a crucial role in species coexistence in forest plant communities. The large observed IV is influenced by the high-dimensional environmental variation. This highlights the importance of considering the response of individuals to the high-dimensional environment when studying species coexistence.

Detection and mapping of artillery craters with very high spatial resolution satellite imagery and deep learning

Erik C. Duncan, Sergii Skakun, Ankit Kariryaa, Alexander Prishchepov

Summary: Unexploded munitions have devastating effects on various aspects, and it is important to detect and map them accurately. This study applies a deep learning approach to identify and map artillery craters in agricultural fields in Eastern Ukraine. The model shows high accuracy in detecting craters, and the reliability improves with larger crater sizes. The estimated crater map reveals a significant number of craters in the region, providing valuable information for demining and assessing the impact of warfare on agriculture and the environment.

Graincast™: monitoring crop production across the Australian grainbelt

R. Lawes, Z. Hochman, E. Jakku, R. Butler, J. Chai, Y. Chen, F. Waldner, G. Mata, R. Donohue

Summary: The Australian dryland grain-cropping landscape requires a large amount of agricultural information that cannot be fulfilled by international crop-monitoring systems. To address this, an integrated analytics system combining satellite-based crop-mapping, crop-modelling, and data-delivery techniques was developed. This system can generate crop information on-demand and deliver it through an application programming interface. End-users are now using crop-monitoring data, highlighting the need for a vertically integrated data supply chain to further develop crop-monitoring technology.
