Summary: This study evaluated the accuracy of predicting unplanned ICU readmission using the Nursing Activities Score (NAS) at ICU discharge and compared it to the Accuracy of the prediction made using the Stability and Workload Index for Transfer (SWIFT) score. The study found that NAS was superior to SWIFT in predicting unplanned ICU readmission. Therefore, NAS may be an effective tool for predicting unplanned ICU readmission.

Summary: This study measures the burden of diarrhea in India and analyzes the mortality trend associated with it over the past 30 years. The study identifies the prevailing etiology and risk factors of diarrheal mortality in India. The results show a significant decline in childhood diarrhea, but it still contributes to a large share of the disease's burden. The study highlights the importance of implementing interventions such as safe water consumption, proper sanitation facilities, nutrition intake, breastfeeding, and vaccination to prevent and control diarrhea in India. Evidence-based policies should also be implemented to sustain diarrhea prevention programs.

Summary: A retrospective cohort study was conducted to determine the relationship between intensivist-to-patient ratios and mortality among ICU patients. The study found no association between the intensivist-to-patient ratio and mortality, suggesting that high intensivist caseloads may not affect ICU patient mortality.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the association between the working hours, vigilance, and executive function of ICU nurses. The results showed that the response time of vigilance was not significantly affected by working hours or shifts, but lapses significantly increased after 8 and 12 hours of work. In addition, certain aspects of executive function (inhibitory control and working memory) were negatively correlated with work duration. No differences in vigilance and executive function were found between day and night shifts.

Summary: This study aimed to explore patients' and caregivers' perceptions of ICU hospitalization and recovery. The results indicated that patients described their ICU hospitalization as scary, traumatic, and lonely. They expressed a desire for more realistic and detailed prognostication about post-ICU recovery, as well as more physical therapy after discharge. Patients highly valued the mental health component of ICU-RC visits but felt that mental health received insufficient attention in other postdischarge healthcare settings. Their knowledge about post-ICU recovery and connection to a primary care provider varied. The study emphasizes the importance of strengthening ICU-RC components to support patient- and family-centered recovery, and provides recommendations for improving post-ICU care.

Summary: The study findings reveal that high nursing workload has negative effects on the quality of nursing care, patient safety, and nurses' wellbeing in ICU. Nurses are aware of these effects and there is a need for more ICU nurses to alleviate the workload. Nurse managers and policymakers should also develop strategies to manage nurse workloads and their impact on patient care.

Summary: COPD poses significant humanistic and socioeconomic burdens on patients and caregivers in Malaysia, including management costs, reduced quality of life, productivity loss, and activity impairment. A majority of patients rely on informal caregivers, while caregivers experience social activity limitations due to their caregiving duties.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the relationship between a general nursing funding scale and an intensive care unit specific nursing workload scale and the cost of nursing staff. The results showed strong correlations between the nursing funding scale and the nursing workload for the entire intensive care unit stay, as well as good correlations between the workload scales and the nursing costs. This suggests that the Nursing Activities Score could be a more accurate measure of nursing workload and should be considered for use in place of the general funding scale in Belgium.

Summary: This study aims to describe the burden of care related to monitoring patient vital signs in an intensive care unit in a Swedish hospital. The results show that documentation of monitoring generates a significant burden of care during intensive care, with no significant difference observed between sexes, but significant differences observed among age groups, diagnose groups, and time of day. Further research is recommended to improve and facilitate monitoring for better patient safety.

Summary: The study aimed to investigate burden among family caregivers of people living with Alzheimer's disease in China. Factors such as age, relationship to the patient, disease severity, caregiver's retirement status, income level, and caring time were found to influence the level of burden. Findings indicate the need for potential interventions like social support and caregiver empowerment to reduce burden among family caregivers.

Summary: The study aimed to examine the association between workload and patient safety culture among ICU nurses. The results showed that ICU nurses had high positive perceptions in various PSC subscales but considered the overall grade on patient safety as poor. There was a significant negative association between overall workload and PSC perceptions of ICU nurses, highlighting the importance of addressing workload issues to enhance patient safety in clinical practice.

Summary: The study found that early enteral nutrition within 24 hours may not provide additional benefits compared to EN started between 24 and 48 hours in patients with severe acute pancreatitis. However, initiating EN more than 48 hours after diagnosis was associated with significantly higher hospital mortality compared to EN starting within the first 48 hours.

Summary: This multicentre study evaluated the effects of glycine and BCAAs on gut barrier and microbiota in haemodialysis patients. The results showed no impact on serum levels of cytokines, appetite mediators, intestinal permeability, endocannabinoids, or faecal IgA. Overall, faecal microbiota composition and diversity did not change with glycine or BCAA supplementation, but there was a decrease in the abundance of L. paracasei and B. dentium.

Summary: The study found that the intake of branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) and glycine did not have a significant impact on the nutritional status and body weight of patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis. Summary: The association between oral function and nutritional state is more obvious in nutritional risk scores than in the malnutrition diagnosis by GLIM in this sample. The NiOF score, as an interval variable, showed correlations with number of teeth, as well as nutritional risk evaluated by the MNA-SF and NRS scores. Additionally, NiOF scores were higher among denture wearers.

Summary: Gastrointestinal cancer surgery is the primary treatment for gastrointestinal cancers. Prehabilitation before surgery aims to optimize the patient's condition and improve postoperative recovery. This review summarizes the latest evidence of preoperative prehabilitation on postoperative outcomes and discusses potential therapeutic targets. Preoperative interventions combining nutrition and physical activity show improvements in physical performance and quality of life in patients with esophagogastric and colorectal cancers, but no benefits in postoperative complications and mortality. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings and identify patients who will benefit from prehabilitation.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy of mechanical insufflation-exsufflation (MI-E) in preventing ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in critically ill patients. The results showed a significantly lower incidence of VAP in the MI-E group compared to the traditional chest physical therapy group, suggesting that MI-E may help reduce the occurrence of VAP in critically ill patients.
