Summary: The ketogenic diet is an effective treatment for infantile spasms syndrome. This study investigated the effect of adding a prebiotic fiber to the diet, and found that it improved metabolic parameters and gut microbiota diversity. However, it had no impact on spasms or developmental outcomes.

Summary: While diet and dietary patterns play a significant role in reducing the risk of PD or alleviating PD severity, inconsistent results and the need for further evidence highlight the necessity for more research before making dietary recommendations. Studies on the potential beneficial effects of dietary patterns on PD should also consider potential risks.

Summary: This study reveals that the hexosamine biosynthetic pathway controls the fate determination of primordial germ cells (PGCs) through O-GlcNAc modification. A maternal ketogenic diet that reduces carbohydrate metabolism represses PGC formation and affects the number of ovarian germ cells in newborn pups. These findings suggest the importance of nutritional and metabolic mechanisms in PGC fate determination.

Summary: The ketogenic diet is gaining popularity as a safe and effective alternative or adjunct therapy for Parkinson's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases. It has been found to improve biomarkers of health, symptoms of depression, anxiety, and PD symptoms in patients. Further clinical trials are recommended for more generalized results.

Summary: With university admission, there are major changes in students' daily habits that can lead to mental health problems. Adherence to a healthy diet, such as the Mediterranean diet, can be very beneficial for mental health. This study found that poor adherence to the Mediterranean diet was significantly associated with depressive symptoms among Spanish nursing students, highlighting the importance of prevention programs focused on health and mental health issues in universities.

Summary: This systematic review examined the association between a vegetarian diet and mental health outcomes such as depression, anxiety, and stress. The results from 13 publications were analyzed, including four cohort studies and nine cross-sectional studies. The findings suggest that there is no significant association between a vegetarian diet and depression or anxiety. However, due to insufficient data, the relationship with stress could not be determined. Further cohort studies are needed to explore the effects of a vegetarian diet on mental health outcomes.

Summary: This article reports a case of a seven-year-old Pit Bull terrier with a cutaneous mast cell tumor. The patient refused standard of care and steroid medication, and switched to a carbohydrate-free, calorie-restricted ketogenic diet. The tumor gradually disappeared over several months. Further research is needed to determine the efficacy of this non-toxic dietary therapy for canine patients with malignant mast cell tumors.

Summary: Autosomal polycystic kidney disease is the most common inherited kidney disease, accounting for 5% of all end-stage kidney disease cases. The approved therapy for this condition is Tolvaptan, which has a significant impact on patients' daily lives with its diuretic effect. Recent literature has explored non-pharmacological therapeutic strategies, such as dietary plans and physical exercise, to slow cyst growth and preserve kidney function.

Summary: This study aimed to gather research evidence on the association between diet and depression and anxiety among college students. A systematic review of 21 selected studies found a positive association between diet and depression and anxiety in most cross-sectional studies, although some studies showed inconsistent results. Furthermore, intervention studies demonstrated that a healthy diet, including the consumption of fruits and vegetables, improved depression. The study concludes that more prospective, longitudinal, and randomized controlled trials are needed to establish causal associations between diet and depression and anxiety, and further research is needed to investigate the biological mechanisms of nutrients' actions on anxiety and depression.

Summary: In this study using a rat model, it was found that infants with infantile spasms syndrome who were on a ketogenic diet (KD) had severe hepatic steatosis, which could be prevented by a specific probiotic blend. These probiotics protected the liver by improving signaling pathways and promoting lipid oxidation, potentially reducing the risk of hepatic side effects in children receiving KD treatment.
