Summary: The creation and dissemination of knowledge is crucial for digital innovation in firms, but many digital units fail to achieve this. Through interviews with experts and digital unit members from eight firms, we find that lack of structural separation and poor strategizing in digital units reinforce existing schemes and organizational rigidities, making knowledge exchange difficult. Successful digital innovation relies on knowledge creation and exchange among experts, non-experts, and managers. Digital units should integrate experts from digital technology and functional domains, and translate their tacit knowledge into digital innovation requirements. Balance between fluidity and stability is necessary, as sticky knowledge requires long-term relationships, while digital innovation requires fluid knowledge inflows and outflows. We contribute to digital unit research by emphasizing strong cross-functional exchanges.

Summary: In the context of the digital economy, the competitive environment of enterprises is changing rapidly. Instead of relying solely on individual efforts, enterprises should actively embed themselves into digital technology innovation networks to access external digital technology knowledge resources through organizational cooperation. The relationship between digital technology innovation network embedding and innovation performance needs further clarification. This study explores this relationship and also examines the mediating effect of knowledge acquisition and the moderating effect of digital transformation. The findings indicate that the relational and structural embedding of digital technology innovation networks positively impacts firm innovation performance, and knowledge acquisition plays a mediating role in this relationship. Digital transformation moderates the relationship, with different levels of digital transformation having varied effects on firms' innovation performance. Overall, the relational and structural embedding of digital technology innovation networks encourage firms to acquire social capital and tacit knowledge, leading to improved innovation performance. Firms should focus on building external cooperation networks, establishing a positive corporate image, strengthening communication and cooperation with network members, fostering mutually beneficial cooperation beliefs, and promoting digital transformation.
