PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs), identified as a category of small non-coding RNAs, play crucial roles in cell biology and show potential value in cancer research. Identifying cancer-related piRNAs and assessing their target genes could help in developing better cancer prevention and treatment strategies.
As a currently identified small non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) category, the PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) are crucial mediators of cell biology. The human genome comprises over 30.000 piRNA genes. Although considered a new field in cancer research, the piRNA pathway is shown by the existing evidence as an active pathway in a variety of different types of cancers with critical impacts on main aspects of cancer progression. Among the regulatory molecules that contribute to maintaining the dynamics of cancer cells, the P-element Induced WImpy testis (PIWI) proteins and piRNAs, as new players, have not been broadly studied so far. Therefore, the identification of cancer-related piRNAs and the assessment of target genes of piRNAs may lead to better cancer prevention and therapy strategies. This review articleaimed to highlight the role and function of piRNAs based on existing data. Understanding the role of piRNA in cancer may provide perspectives on their applications as particular biomarker signature in diagnosis in early stage, prognosis and therapeutic strategies.

Endoplasmic reticulum Metallo protease 1, a triggering factor for unfolded protein response and promising target in colorectal cancer

Sanaz Dastghaib, Pooneh Mokarram, Mehran Erfani, Saeid Ghavami, Seyed Vahid Hosseini, Mozhdeh Zamani

Summary: The research investigated the role of ERMP1 in UPR activation in colorectal cancer, finding that silencing ERMP1 gene significantly decreased the expression of UPR-associated protein markers. This suggests that ERMP1 plays an important role in UPR activation in colorectal cancer.

Aqueous extract of Stevia rebaudiana (Bertoni) Bertoni abrogates death-related signaling pathways via boosting the expression profile of oxidative defense systems

Leila Oudbor, Zohreh Mokhtari, Sanaz Dastghaib, Pooneh Mokarram, Huda Fatima Rajani, Mahdi Barazesh, Siamak Salami

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of stevia extract on gene expression in diabetic rats and pancreatic cell lines. The findings indicate that stevia extract upregulates antioxidative defense genes and downregulates genes associated with cell death, leading to clinical improvements in diabetes.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease is a significant threat to global health due to an aging population. Current drugs for AD are not very effective, making the targeting of autophagy an attractive therapeutic approach. Drug repositioning is being considered as a time-efficient and cost-effective strategy for developing new therapies.

Resveratrol promotes liver cell survival in mice liver-induced ischemia-reperfusion through unfolded protein response: a possible approach in liver transplantation

Hamidreza Totonchi, Pooneh Mokarram, Saeed Karima, Ramazan Rezaei, Sanaz Dastghaib, Farhad Koohpeyma, Shokoofe Noori, Negar Azarpira

Summary: This study found that low-dose resveratrol (0.02 and 0.2 mg/kg) treatment after ischemia significantly reduced ALT and AST levels. Additionally, the expression of UPR pathway genes was significantly reduced in the resveratrol group compared to the control group. The histopathological changes induced by I/R were significantly improved in mice receiving lower doses of resveratrol.

The Comparative Role of BAMLET and 5-Fluorouracil in Colorectal Cancer Cells by Targeting WNT/β-Catenin Pathway

Marziyeh Babazadeh, Mozhdeh Zamani, Parvaneh Mehrbod, Pooneh Mokarram

Summary: This study investigated the effects of 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) and bovine alpha-lactalbumin made lethal to tumor cells (BAMLET) on colon cancer cells, focusing on the Wnt signaling pathway. The results showed that BAMLET downregulated the expression of β-catenin and upregulated the expression of E-cadherin, while also reducing the expression of VEGF. Bovine alpha-lactalbumin made lethal to tumor cells can be considered as a potential strategy in the treatment of colorectal cancer.

Summary: The aim of this prospective cohort study was to investigate the impact of statins on long-term respiratory symptoms and pulmonary fibrosis in COVID-19 patients with diabetes mellitus. The study found that the Non-statin group had significantly higher odds of cough and dyspnea compared to the Statin group during the follow-up period. Although there was no significant difference in pulmonary fibrosis score change between the groups, Non-statin patients with > 5 years of DM were more likely to exhibit higher fibrosis scores during follow-up.
