The research aimed to analyze sustainability inequalities in water consumption of EU countries, finding that countries with high GDP and population showed high water stress and total water withdrawal. Countries with lower industry value added to GDP ratios exhibited higher industrial water use efficiency. Policy suggestions and formula application guidelines for regional-level comparisons were provided.
Water scarcity is becoming a global concern for many reasons as its consumption increases. This research aimed to analyze sustainability inequalities in the water consumption of EU countries. Descriptive statistics using data for four AQUASTAT periods (2002, 2007, 2012, and 2017), and quotients for the AQUASTAT 2017 period, were calculated using a proposed econometric model. The main results were that countries with high GPD and population showed high water stress and total water withdrawal. Countries with lower industry-value-added-to-GDP quotients were among those with higher industrial water use efficiency, while low water-services-use-efficiency quotients were associated with high services value added to GDP. Suggestions for policymakers are provided and formula application guidelines for regional-level comparisons are described.

How can Stakeholder Capitalism contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals? A Cross-network Literature Analysis

Donizete Beck, Marcos Ferasso

Summary: Our research investigates how Stakeholder Capitalism can contribute to global governance in achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through a mixed study combining research synthesis, categorization, and network analysis, we found that Stakeholder Capitalism and its principles provide a favorable environment for the majority of SDGs and can particularly support SDGs 8, 9, and 17. However, further research is needed to address the limited literature on Stakeholder Capitalism's impact on SDGs 6, 14, and 15, specifically considering non-human stakeholders and the environment. We also discussed the linkage between Stakeholder Theory and Stakeholder Capitalism constructs, demonstrating their potential in achieving the SDGs.

The Use of Internal Resources for the Creation of Innovation: An Empirical Analysis of Portuguese Companies Benefiting from Tax Incentives for Research and Development

Cicero Eduardo Walter, Manuel Au-Yong-Oliveira, Marcos Ferasso, Daniel Ferreira Polonia, Claudia Miranda Veloso

Summary: This research analyzed 339 Portuguese companies that used tax incentives for R&D activities from 2013 to 2016, and assessed their behavior in terms of promoting and appropriating value through innovation. The results indicated that there were no statistically significant differences in the promotion and appropriation of value through innovation based on the size and age of companies. However, the averages of value appropriation indicators for intangible assets and the efficiencies of assets and liabilities varied according to the level of technological intensity. Therefore, there is a need to reevaluate tax incentives for R&D activities to meet the diverse innovation needs of different enterprises and their technological dynamics.

The influence of a company's inherent values on its sustainability: Evidence from a born-sustainable SME in the footwear industry

Charlie Lynch, Marcos Ferasso

Summary: SMEs play a significant role in global corporations, and their collective impact on sustainability is substantial even though their individual emissions may be smaller. This research investigates the influence of the founder's values on a company's sustainability across social, environmental, and economic dimensions. Using the Agency Theory as a framework, an exploratory case study was conducted to analyze qualitative data. The findings highlight the influence of inherent values, such as Veganism, Ethical Drive, and Ecological Consciousness, on the environmental and economic sustainability of the company. Furthermore, the match between the founder and company's values contributes to the growth of sustainability in various dimensions. This research emphasizes the importance of translating inherent values into sustainable practices in the private sector.
