The study focused on the effects of foliar application of putrescine and water deficit stress on Salvia officinalis L., showing significant impacts on physiological and biochemical attributes, particularly under water deficit stress. Putrescine acts as a stress-protecting compound, modulating the antioxidative system, maintaining membrane stability, and increasing secondary metabolites.
To study the effects of foliar application of putrescine (distilled water (0), 0.75, 1.5, and 2.25 mM) and water deficit stress (20%, 40%, 60%, and 80% available soil water depletion (ASWD)) on the physiological, biochemical, and molecular attributes of Salvia officinalis L., a factorial experiment was performed in a completely randomized design with three replications in the growth chamber. The results of Real-Time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) analysis showed that putrescine concentration, irrigation regime, and the two-way interaction between irrigation regime and putrescine concentration significantly influenced cineole synthase (CS), sabinene synthase (SS), and bornyl diphosphate synthase (BPPS) relative expression. The highest concentration of 1,8-cineole, camphor, alpha-thujone, beta-thujone, CS, SS, and BPPS were obtained in the irrigation regime of 80% ASWD with the application of 0.75 mM putrescine. There was high correlation between expression levels of the main monoterpenes synthase and the concentration of main monoterpenes. The observed correlation between the two enzyme activities of ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and catalase (CAT) strongly suggests they have coordinated action. On the other hand, the highest peroxidase (PO) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) concentrations were obtained with the application of 0.75 mM putrescine under the irrigation regime of 40% ASWD. Putrescine showed a significant increase in LAI and RWC under water deficit stress. There was an increasing trend in endogenous putrescine when putrescine concentration was increased in all irrigation regimes. Overall, the results suggest that putrescine may act directly as a stress-protecting compound and reduced H2O2 to moderate the capacity of the antioxidative system, maintain the membrane stability, and increase secondary metabolites under water deficit stress.

Informative title: Development of lighting intensity approach for shoot proliferation in Phalaenopsis amabilis through combination with silver nanoparticles

Yusuf Farrokhzad, Alireza Babaei, Abbas Yadollahi, Arman Beyraghdar Kashkooli, Ali Mokhtassi-Bidgoli, Shahriar Hessami

Summary: The experiment demonstrated that suitable light intensity and silver nanoparticles concentration can enhance shoot proliferation in Phalaenopsis orchids. Low light intensity and 5 μM AgNPs showed the most favorable effects on shoot growth, while higher light intensities improved chlorophyll, carbohydrate, and protein content in the regenerants.

Response of an Invasive Weed, Lepyrodiclis holosteoides Fenzl., and Wheat to Nitrogen and Auxinic Herbicides Applied in Pre and Tank Mix with Photosynthetic Inhibitors

Zahra Heydari, Ali Mokhtassi-Bidgoli, Saeed Reza Yaghoobi

Summary: Some herbicides, including 2,4-D, effectively suppress broadleaf weeds in wheat. The impact of L. holosteoides on wheat yield losses is unknown. This study investigated the effects of integrated nitrogen rates and postemergence herbicides on weed control, wheat growth, and yield. The results showed that 2,4-D+MCPA tank mixed with bentazon was the most effective in controlling L. holosteoides, followed by bromoxynil+2,4-D, bentazon+dichlorprop-p, and bromoxynil+MCPA. Herbicides improved wheat output by 12-25%. Nitrogen rates had little influence on L. holosteoides growth and control, but moderate nitrogen treatment increased wheat yield.

In vitro rooting, plant growth, monosaccharide profile and anatomical analysis of Phalaenopsis regenerants under different regions of visible light

Summary: Light quality has different effects on the rooting and survival rate of Phalaenopsis tissue cultured plantlets. Fluorescent and green light promote rooting and leaf growth, while white LED leads to the longest root length. Rooting is not suitable under red+green light. Fluorescent and green light result in better leaf length, while blue light decreases leaf length. RB and FL light show the highest content of monosaccharides, while RG and BG have the lowest content. Fluorescent and green light promote cell expansion in the roots and lead to the highest ex vitro survival rate of the plantlets.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes interact with light intensity to affect morpho-biochemical, nutrient uptake, DNA damage, and secondary metabolism of Stevia rebaudiana

Dariush Ramezan, Yusuf Farrokhzad, Ali Mokhtassi-Bidgoli, Mojtaba Rasouli-Alamuti

Summary: This study evaluated the interaction between nanoparticles and light intensity on the induction of stevia shoots. It was found that the interaction of MWCNTs at a concentration of 50 mg L-1 with a light intensity of 200 p.molmiddotm(-2)middots(-1) improved morphological traits, nutrient absorption, total carbohydrates, and SVglys accumulation in stevia. However, high light intensity increased DNA damage.

Enzymatic and non-enzymatic response of grafted and ungrafted young European pear (Pyrus communis L.) trees to drought stress

Zeinab Maleki Asayesh, Kazem Arzani, Ali Mokhtassi-Bidgoli, Hamid Abdollahi

Summary: Drought stress had negative effects on the growth and antioxidant defense system of rootstocks, with P rootstock being more sensitive to drought stress. However, grafted combinations showed better tolerance with the enzymatic antioxidant defense system, possibly due to induced resistance by rootstocks and the cultivar's ability to mitigate the negative effects of drought stress.

Harvest time explains substantially more variance in yield, essential oil and quality performances of Salvia officinalis than irrigation and putrescine application

Maryam Mohammadi-Cheraghabadi, Seyed Ali Mohammad Modarres-Sanavy, Fatemeh Sefidkon, Ali Mokhtassi-Bidgoli, Saeid Hazrati

Summary: The study investigates the effects of putrescine application under optimum and deficit stress conditions on the yield, content, and profile of sage essential oil. Results show that irrigation regimes and putrescine concentration significantly influence dry weight, essential oil yield and content, as well as myrcene and borneol concentrations. A nearly 30% soil water depletion irrigation regime resulted in the highest essential oil yield with better quantity and quality in summer.

Natural variation in photosynthesis and water use efficiency of locally adapted Persian walnut populations under drought stress and recovery

Mohammad M. Arab, Hossein Askari, Sasan Aliniaeifard, Ali Mokhtassi-Bidgoli, Ahmad Estaji, Mohammad Sadat-Hosseini, Seyed Sajad Sohrabi, Mohsen B. Mesgaran, Charles A. Leslie, Patrick J. Brown, Kourosh Vahdati

Summary: By subjecting a diverse panel of 60 walnut families to progressive drought and re-watering, changes in the efficiency of photosynthesis and water content were investigated. Severe water withholding reduced various photosynthetic parameters but improved water use efficiency. Cluster analysis grouped the families into tolerant, moderately tolerant, and sensitive groups based on their response to drought stress. Phenotypic data analysis revealed that certain chlorophyll fluorescence parameters serve as reliable and non-destructive biomarkers for assessing walnut performance under drought stress. Additionally, there was a significant correlation between photosynthetic traits and geoclimatic factors, suggesting the influence of climate and geography on walnut adaptation.
