Synthesis and structure of complexes [NiL6][B10H10] (L = DMF (1) or DMSO (2)) are described. Both complexes have been prepared from nickel(II) chloride and (Et3NH)(2)[B10H10] in the corresponding solvent. Compounds 1 and 2 have been characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction. Weak interactions between BH-groups of the boron cluster and CH-groups of DMF and DMSO molecules found in crystals 1 and 2 have been detected in the IR spectra. Complexes [NiL6][B10H10] (L = DMF, DMSO) can be applied in solid-phase synthesis of nickel(II) complexes with azaheterocyclic ligands. Complexes [NiL3][B10H10] (L = Bipy or Phen) have been selectively prepared by mechanical activation of 1 + 3Phen and 2 + 3Bipy mixtures. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
