This study examines the relationship between economic complexity, human capital, renewable energy, urbanization, economic development, and ecological footprint in 20 countries. The results indicate that economic complexity, economic development, and urbanization increase the ecological footprint, while human capital and renewable energy contribute to the ecological footprint.
Environmental sustainability has gained more importance in recent time to ensure socio-economic sustainability via healthy environment. Ecological footprint has also emerged as the central research area drawing attention of the scholars. However, there appears a gap in pointing out the significant factors that determine ecological footprint. The present investigation explores the relationship between economic complexity, human capital, renewable energy, urbanization, economic development, and ecological footprint in 20 countries divided into two panels (leading ten economic complex and renewable energy-consuming countries). The current study employ's panel data estimators, for instance, fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS), dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS) and the canonical cointegrating regression (CCR) long-run estimators to the period from 1980 - 2017. The results suggest that economic complexity, economic development, and urbanization raise the ecological footprint in both panels. Human capital and renewable energy induce ecological footprint, whereas renewable energy increases ecological footprint in the first panel. Based on empirical evidence, the study recommends the governments of these countries promote production processes that are friendlier to the environment and introduce greener technologies in exports for a drastic reduction in environmental pollution. Does Inclusive Growth Contribute Towards Sustainable Development? Evidence from Selected Developing Countries

Muhammad Kamran, Muhammad Zahid Rafique, Abdul Majeed Nadeem, Sofia Anwar

Summary: Debates on the relationship between inclusive growth and sustainable development have been increasing in recent years. This study analyzed data from 11 developing countries in 2008 and 2018, finding that Turkey and China performed the best in terms of inclusive growth, while Pakistan and Indonesia performed the worst. In terms of sustainable development, Brazil and Pakistan ranked the lowest, while Cambodia and Thailand ranked the highest. The study also revealed a negative correlation between social inclusion and poverty with life-threatening factors of sustainable development, as well as a positive correlation between unsatisfactory medical services, education, state transparency in inclusive growth and poverty and its consequences in sustainable development. Therefore, the study suggests that developing countries should prioritize inclusive growth as a policy strategy to enhance sustainable development.

Connectedness between geopolitical risk, financial instability indices and precious metals markets: Novel findings from Russia Ukraine conflict perspective

Umer Shahzad, Kamel Si Mohammed, Sunil Tiwari, Joanna Nakonieczny, Renata Nesterowicz

Summary: This study analyzes the impact of economic instability and geopolitical risk on traditional non-renewable energy and precious metals markets. The results show a higher level of connectedness during the Russia-Ukrainian conflict. Geopolitical risk, financial instability, and oil return are net transmitters of shocks, while gold, gas, and silver are net receivers. Gold serves as a stable asset and provides a hedge against geopolitical risk and financial instability. The findings highlight the importance of considering geopolitical risk and financial instability in investment and production decisions in metals, precious, and energy markets.

Dynamic connectedness among climate change index, green financial assets and renewable energy markets: Novel evidence from sustainable development perspective

Daniel Balsalobre Lorente, Kamel Si Mohammed, Javier Cifuentes-Faura, Umer Shahzad

Summary: This paper investigates the relationship among the climate change index, green financial assets, renewable energy markets, and geopolitical risk index using Quantile Vector Autoregressive (QVAR) and wavelet coherence (WC) methods. The study finds that the Total connectedness index (TCI) varies depending on the quantile, with the highest TCI originating in the upper quantile. The TCI decreases after the second wave of COVID19 but increases during the first 100 days of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Furthermore, the results show that Geopolitical risk (GPR) acts as a net transmitter of the climate change index during the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The green bond and clean energy markets are negatively correlated with the GPR at the extreme 10th and 90th quantiles. The wavelet coherence analysis confirms the QVAR results, suggesting that the climate change market can serve as a safe haven against GPR during the Russian invasion. The study emphasizes the importance of the climate change index, green financial assets, and clean energy in financial markets and their role in international peace and reducing geopolitical risk.

Efficient resource utilization of the electricity distribution sector using nonparametric data envelopment analysis and influential factors

Majid Ikram, Muhammad Zahid Rafique, Kamel Si Mohammed, Rida Waheed, Diogo Ferraz

Summary: This study investigates the efficient resource utilization of the electricity distribution sector in Pakistan and identifies the influential factors affecting it. The study uses the most recent panel data from 11 distribution firms in Pakistan to evaluate the performance ranking of distribution utilities. The results show that electricity sales, consumer density, and industrial consumers have a positive impact on the efficiency of distribution utilities, while distribution losses have a negative association. These findings provide valuable insights for policymakers and industry stakeholders to improve resource utilization and overall performance in the electricity distribution sector.

Exploring the dynamic connectedness among energy transition and its drivers: Understanding the moderating role of global geopolitical risk

Muhammad Zubair Chishti, Avik Sinha, Umer Zaman, Umer Shahzad

Summary: The recent progress report on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 2022 highlights the existence of a policy gap at the global level in achieving SDG 7. The Energy Transition is identified as a possible means to achieve this objective. However, the geopolitical risks associated with global interconnectedness might impede the energy transition process. Therefore, a policy framework is needed to isolate the impacts of geopolitical risks and maximize the positive impacts of energy transition drivers.

Is there any market state-dependent contribution from Blockchain-enabled solutions to ESG investments? Evidence from conventional and Islamic ESG stocks

Umer Shahzad, Mahdi Ghaemi Asl, Marco Tedeschi

Summary: This study examines the relationship between three Blockchain-based platforms (AIB, TIX, and BCDN) and global ESG indexes (ESG and SESG). The results show that BCDN has a higher coherence with ESG and SESG investments compared to AIB and TIX, but this coherence decreases with lower quantiles and shorter-term perspectives. Additionally, all Blockchain-enabled innovations significantly contribute to ESG-screened businesses under normal and bullish market conditions, except for the AIB-SESG pairs. Only BCDN and AIB provide network-transmitting functions in a bull market and a normal market respectively, indicating the market state-dependency of Blockchain-based innovation spillovers. Therefore, expecting significant contributions from BCDN or AIB in creating ESG markets and achieving sustainable objectives necessitates a focus on market conditions.

Does enterprise digital transformation contribute to the carbon emission reduction? Micro-level evidence from China

Yuping Shang, Syed Ali Raza, Zhe Huo, Umer Shahzad, Xin Zhao

Summary: Energy saving, emission reduction, and low carbon development are crucial for sustainable development globally and for China's dual carbon target. The digital transformation of enterprises plays a significant role in reducing carbon emissions by improving technological innovation, internal control, and environmental information disclosure. Based on a text analysis of annual reports from Shanghai and Shenzhen listed companies during 2012-2020, the study measures the level of enterprise digital transformation and empirically investigates its impact on carbon emission intensity. The findings show that enterprise digital transformation effectively reduces carbon emissions, and this effect remains robust even after conducting various tests. The study also analyzes the heterogeneity and concludes that the impact of digital transformation is stronger in regions with strong intellectual property protection and capital-intensive enterprises. However, it does not differ based on enterprise types, environmental regulation intensity, and information infrastructure construction. This paper discusses the path choices for enterprises to reduce carbon emissions, offering insights for businesses to seize opportunities in the new wave of technological and green economic transition.
