This study found that foliar application of zinc and silicon can improve the growth and antioxidant capacity of wheat under terminal drought stress, leading to increased yield and related traits. The combined application of zinc and silicon had the best effect, alleviating the adverse effects of drought by regulating antioxidant defense mechanisms and production of proline and soluble proteins.
Wheat is an important global staple food crop; however, its productivity is severely hampered by changing climate. Erratic rain patterns cause terminal drought stress, which affect reproductive development and crop yield. This study investigates the potential and zinc (Zn) and silicon (Si) to ameliorate terminal drought stress in wheat and associated mechanisms. Two different drought stress levels, i.e., control [80% water holding capacity (WHC) was maintained] and terminal drought stress (40% WHC maintained from BBCH growth stage 49 to 83) combined with five foliar-applied Zn-Si combinations (i.e., control, water spray, 4 mM Zn, 40 mM Si, 4 mM Zn + 40 mM Si applied 7 days after the initiation of drought stress). Results revealed that application of Zn and Si improved chlorophyll and relative water contents under well-watered conditions and terminal drought stress. Foliar application of Si and Zn had significant effect on antioxidant defense mechanism, proline and soluble protein, which showed that application of Si and Zn ameliorated the effects of terminal drought stress mainly by regulating antioxidant defense mechanism, and production of proline and soluble proteins. Combined application of Zn and Si resulted in the highest improvement in growth and antioxidant defense. The application of Zn and Si improved yield and related traits, both under well-watered conditions and terminal drought stress. The highest yield and related traits were recorded for combined application of Zn and Si. For grain and biological yield differences among sole and combined Zn-Si application were statistically non-significant (p>0.05). In conclusion, combined application of Zn-Si ameliorated the adverse effects of terminal drought stress by improving yield through regulating antioxidant mechanism and production of proline and soluble proteins. Results provide valuable insights for further cross talk between Zn-Si regulatory pathways to enhance grain biofortification.

Effect of salinity on ccmfn gene RNA editing of mitochondria in wild barley and uncommon types of RNA editing

Ahmed Ramadan, Afnan A. Alnufaei, Sajid Fiaz, Thana K. Khan, Sabah M. Hassan

Summary: The mitochondria are responsible for cellular respiration and energy production. The Cytochrome C complex plays a crucial role in electron transport between complex III and complex IV in the respiratory chain. One of the main subunits of this complex, CcmFN, is believed to be essential for assembling holocytochrome. In the wild-type plant Hordeum vulgare subsp. spontaneum, the ccmfn gene is subjected to high salt stress, resulting in various nucleotide and amino acid modifications. The study also discovered unusual RNA editing types, such as A to C, C to A, A to G, A to U, T to A, T to C, C to G, G to C, and T to G, which differ from typical C to U editing observed in most cases.

Summary: Drought stress is a major limiting factor for crop growth and productivity. Melatonin, as an emerging plant hormone, can improve drought tolerance in plants. This study found that the application of 300 μM melatonin promoted the growth, increased yield, improved nutritional quality, and enhanced antioxidant activity in sorghum plants.

Summary: In this study, alkaline-salt responsive lncRNAs were identified using transcriptome-wide analysis. The results revealed the competitive relationships between lncRNAs, miRNAs, and mRNAs, and a ceRNA network was built. It was found that osa-miR5809b is dysregulated and involved in the defense response of rice against alkaline-salt stress, highlighting the regulatory functions of lncRNAs acting as ceRNAs in the mechanisms underlying alkaline-salt resistance in rice.

Progress in genome-wide identification of RBPs and their role in mitigating stresses, and growth in plants

Muhammad Haroon, Hala Tariq, Rabail Afzal, Muhammad Anas, Shanza Nasar, Neha Kainat, Sajid Fiaz, Uswa Irfan, Fahad Idrees, Muhammad Mubashar Zafar

Summary: Recent ribonomics research has identified thousands of RNA Binding Proteins (RBPs) that play a crucial role in regulating post transcriptional changes in plant development, growth, and response to various stresses. Methods such as XRNAX and OOPS have been adapted for plant systems and can effectively identify RBPs binding to both coding and non-coding RNAs. This review discusses these methods and the role of RBPs in plant development, growth, and immunity.

Major challenges in widespread adaptation of aerobic rice system and potential opportunities for future sustainability

Muhammad Shahbaz Farooq, Hira Fatima, Obaid Ur Rehman, Muhammad Yousuf, Rabia Kalsoom, Sajid Fiaz, Muhammad Ramzan Khan, Muhammad Uzair, Shuhao Huo

Summary: Climate change and scarcity of resources pose major challenges to sustainable rice production. The aerobic rice system, with its high input-use efficiency, has the potential to replace conventional rice under these conditions. However, challenges such as weed infestation and low nitrogen use efficiencies hinder its widespread adoption. To overcome these challenges, it is necessary to investigate constraints and risks and provide adjustable measures. This article reviews the implications of climate change on traditional rice systems and presents management strategies for the adoption of the aerobic rice system for sustainable production.

Summary: In this study, functional KASP markers and morphological traits were used to evaluate the drought tolerance of 40 wheat genotypes. The results showed significant variations in morphological traits, indicating that root length and primary root could be used as selection criteria for drought-tolerant wheat genotypes. KASP genotyping along with morphological data revealed that genotypes Markaz, Bhakar Star, China 2, Aas, and Chakwal-50 performed better under drought stress, suggesting their potential as parents for developing drought-tolerant wheat genotypes.

Summary: This study compares the nutrient and microbial contents of washed rice water (WRW) from white and brown rice, finding that brown rice WRW has higher levels of phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, and zinc. The nutrient contents of WRW increase with fermentation, except for carbon which decreases. Additionally, brown rice WRW has higher levels of P-solubilizing bacteria, while white rice WRW has higher levels of K-solubilizing bacteria.

Summary: Rapeseed is an important oil seed crop worldwide, but the increasing demand for edible oil threatens its availability. A two-year field experiment was conducted to characterize rapeseed germplasm in semi-arid climatic conditions. Significant differences were found among rapeseed genotypes in terms of their morphological attributes and yield traits. The genotype 'Dunkled' showed higher seed yield, while 'Nifa-Gold' exhibited better oil seed quality. These results suggest that rapeseed genotypes with variability can be used in breeding programs to improve production and oil quality under different environmental conditions.

Evaluation of Various Organic Amendment Sources to Improve the Root Yield and Sugar Contents of Sugar Beet Genotypes (Beta vulgaris L.) under Arid Environments

Muhammad Ijaz, Sami Ul-Allah, Abdul Sattar, Ahmad Sher, Ijaz Hussain, Ahmad Nawaz

Summary: An experiment was conducted to optimize different organic amendments for sugar beet production and root quality. Among the amendments, poultry manure at an optimized rate of 20 t ha(-1) showed the most effective results in terms of root yield, sugar yield, and sugar quality. The improved yield was attributed to better leaf growth and root yield, resulting in higher reserve accumulation in roots. The 'California' genotype performed better than the 'Serenada' genotype. Therefore, growing the 'California' genotype in sandy loam soils with poultry manure application (20 t ha(-1)) could be a practical option for improving sugar beet yield and sugar recovery.
