This study compared oxidative stress status and quality of life in type 2 diabetes mellitus participants according to treatment modality. Results showed that oxidative stress parameters were higher and quality of life was worse in insulin-treated participants compared to those treated with oral antidiabetic drugs. These results may be closely related to more severe chronic complications in insulin-dependent diabetes.
Background: Oxidative stress triggered by hyperglycemia in diabetic patients leads to macrovascular and microvascular complications, resulting in deterioration in the quality of life. Aims: This study aimed to compare the oxidative stress status and quality of life in participants with type 2 diabetes mellitus according to treatment modality. Patients and Methods: Ninety type 2 diabetes mellitus participants aged between 40 and 60 years were included in the study. Forty-five participants were receiving oral antidiabetic drugs and 45 participants were receiving insulin therapy. Total antioxidant status, total oxidant status, and paraoxonase-1 were measured and oxidative stress indices were calculated. The SF-36 quality of life questionnaire was applied to the participants. Results: The total oxidant status and oxidative stress indices values were higher in the insulin-treated group than in the group treated with oral antidiabetic drugs. Paraoxonase-1 activities of the oral antidiabetic drugs-treated group were statistically significantly higher than the insulin-treated group. In the oral antidiabetic drugs-treated group, the physical function, social function, and pain subscale scores were higher than that of the insulin-treated group. In all participants, a negative correlation between total antioxidant status and fasting blood glucose and hemoglobin A1c, a positive correlation between total oxidant status and hemoglobin A1c and triglyceride, and a positive correlation was found between oxidative stress indices and fasting blood glucose and hemoglobin A1c. Conclusions: It was found that oxidative stress parameters were higher and quality of life was worse in the insulin-treated participants than participants treated with oral antidiabetic drugs. These results may be closely related to more severe chronic complications in insulin-dependent diabetes.

Summary: The trial compared the cardiovascular and renal outcomes of weekly injections of efpeglenatide versus a placebo in participants with type 2 diabetes and a history of cardiovascular disease or current kidney disease. The study found that the risk of cardiovascular events was lower with efpeglenatide treatment, and a composite renal outcome event was also reduced.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) on glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels. The results demonstrated a correlation between IDA and increased HbA1c concentrations, which significantly decreased after iron treatment. Therefore, IDA should be considered when making decisions based on HbA1c for diagnosis or treatment.

Summary: This study compared serum levels of oxidative stress markers in patients with subclinical hypothyroidism (SH) and overt hypothyroidism (OH) with healthy controls in Kutahya city, Turkey. The results showed higher TOS and OSI levels in SH and OH groups compared to healthy controls, while lower levels of TAS, PON-1, and ARYL were observed in SH and OH groups.

Summary: This study analyzed the drug use of geriatric patients in Turkey using the American 2019 Beers criteria and the Turkish Inappropriate Medication Use in the Elderly (TIME) criteria. The findings showed that the TIME criteria were more successful in evaluating potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs) among the elderly in Turkey, and PIMs were significantly higher in polypharmacy patients.

Summary: This study evaluated osteoporosis awareness and risk in individuals, finding that the majority of participants had a low risk of osteoporosis. The Osteoporosis Self-Assessment Tool for Asians was more effective in determining the risk level compared to the One-Minute Osteoporosis Risk Test. Men should be given equal importance as women in terms of osteoporosis education and media tools should be used more effectively for this purpose.

Comparison with molecular effects of ukrain, tamoxifen, and docetaxel on human breast cancer cell lines

Gulsum Abusoglu, Cengiz Kocak, Fatma Emel Kocak, Bahadir Ozturk, Husamettin Vatansev

Summary: This study compared the cytotoxic effects of tamoxifen and docetaxel with the antiproliferative effects of ukrain on breast cancer cells. The results showed no significant difference between ukrain and docetaxel in terms of proapoptotic and antiapoptotic protein expression in both cell lines. While tamoxifen was more effective than ukrain in MCF-7 cells, ukrain was more effective than tamoxifen in MDA MB-231 cells for inducing apoptosis. These findings suggest that ukrain may be a useful therapeutic agent for treating receptor-negative breast cancer cells.

Summary: Clinically important potential drug-drug interactions (pDDIs) are common in COVID-19 patients and require close monitoring. Patients should be observed for possible clinical manifestations such as QT prolongation, hypoglycemia, and hemorrhage during treatment. Polypharmacy in COVID-19 patients should also be carefully managed.
