Summary: There is a growing interest in dissolved gallium (Ga) in natural waters for tracking water masses, but current analytical methods are time-consuming and labor-intensive. In this study, an automated isotope dilution method was developed to determine Ga in seawater using commercially available equipment. The method addressed challenges such as sample volume and pre-concentration, instrumental interferences, sample carryover, sample recovery variability, and improved detection limits, accuracy, and precision. The new automated method showed comparable Ga concentrations to traditional methods but with greater precision and a lower detection limit.

Summary: The analysis of impurities in a uranium ore concentrate (UOC) provides valuable information on the source, production history, and potential intended use. Concentrations of phosphorus and sulfur were determined by mass spectrometry and compared to results from a pyrohydrolysis method. The method allows for the removal of interferences in the analysis of species in UOC materials.

Summary: Single particle inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (spICP-MS) has been used to determine metallic nanoparticles (NPs) in air. Different extraction strategies and extracting solvents were investigated, and a method for extracting metallic NPs from filters in 4 minutes was developed. The study also found that microquartz fiber filters had better NPs capturing performance. This method has been successfully applied to detect NPs in environmental monitoring stations.

Summary: The adequate iodine status in lactating women is determined by a maternal median urinary iodine concentration (UIC) ≥100 μg/L. However, this criterion does not consider the secretion of iodine into breast milk and cannot accurately reflect the amount of iodine received by infants. Measuring breast milk median iodine concentration (BMIC) is crucial, but a validated method for measuring BMIC has not been developed in Taiwan.

Summary: The present study introduces a new and selective analysis method for determining low xanthate concentrations. This study addresses the growing concern over the environmental impact of xanthates and the need for reliable analysis methods. The method utilizes the complex formation between xanthates and various metal ions in aqueous solution, followed by liquid-liquid extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography, to accurately determine xanthates. By using Cu(II) as the complex metal ion, good separation and high measurement sensitivity are achieved. The method has been optimized for sodium isopropyl xanthate and sodium isobutyl xanthate, with detection limits of 24.7 μg/L and 13.3 μg/L, respectively. With a linear calibration range of 0.1-15 mg/L and a total analysis time of 4-5 min, this method offers a fast and sensitive option for selective xanthate determination.

Summary: The objective of this study is to evaluate different competitive aptamer assays for the detection of beta-conglutin in flour samples using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Two competitive aptamer assay schemes were developed, one using thiolated aptamers on gold nanoparticles and the other using biotinylated aptamers linked to streptavidin-AuNPs. The influence of ICP-MS detection mode on assay performance was explored. The optimized condition achieved a LOD of 2 pM, significantly improving the LOD compared to previous studies.
