This study provides a preliminary evaluation of the role and contribution of biogas as a sustainable energy source towards achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs). It identifies that biogas has direct impacts and contributions to 12 out of the 17 SDGs, mainly through increasing renewable energy, reducing climate change, enhancing waste management, and creating jobs.
Background: Biogas is one of the promising renewable energy sources that successfully implemented at domestic and industrial scales. This work presents a preliminary evaluation of the role and contribution of biogas as a sustainable energy source towards achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs). Methods: This work summarizes the common feedstock and impurities in the biogas as well as the advantages and disadvantages of biogas compared with fossil fuels. Challenges and barriers associated with biogas production in developing and developed countries were elaborated and connected with SDGs. Finally, the relation between the circular economy, biogas, and related SDGs was presented. Significant findings: The biogas has been found to have direct impacts and contributions to 12 out of the 17 SDGs. The main contributions of the biogas come from its ability to increase renewable energy, reduce climate change, enhance the waste management process, and create jobs. A set of 58 indicators was provided as a guideline for the stakeholders within the biogas industry to extend the benefits of the biogas toward the achievement of the SDGs and minimize any possible trade-off. The results of this work will help the different players within the biogas industry to form policy to ensure that biogas contribution to the SDGs is maximized. A. G. Olabi, Hegazy Rezk, Enas Taha Sayed, Rania M. Ghoniem, Mohammad Ali Abdelkareem

Summary: Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is crucial for mitigating global warming. Among CCS technologies, adsorption using amines is a promising approach that is already being used on an industrial scale. This research work integrates Jellyfish optimization (JO) and ANFIS-based modeling to identify the optimal values of temperature, tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA), and imidazole (Im) for maximizing CO2 adsorption capacity. The proposed strategy successfully increased CO2 capture adsorption from 4.27 (mmol/g) to 5.25 (mmol/g).

Hussam Jouhara, Amisha Chauhan, Valentin Guichet, Bertrand Delpech, Mohammad Ali Abdelkareem, A. G. Olabi, Jon Trembley

Summary: Researchers and industrialists are interested in cryogenic technologies due to the unique properties of materials at very low temperatures. This work discusses the recent progress and characteristics of cryogenic mediums in heat transfer applications. Liquid He and N2 are the most commonly used cryogenic mediums, with liquid He providing extremely low temperatures and liquid N2 being cost-effective and easily accessible. The single-phase application of cryogenic mediums is common, while two-phase applications are mainly seen in heat pipes. Cryogenic mediums are crucial for critical and niche applications in aerospace, superconductivity, advanced manufacturing, healthcare, and scientific research.

Optimized Fractional Maximum Power Point Tracking Using Bald Eagle Search for Thermoelectric Generation System

Hegazy Rezk, Abdul Ghani Olabi, Rania M. M. Ghoniem, Mohammad Ali Abdelkareem

Summary: The amount of energy harvested by a thermoelectric generator (TEG) depends on the temperature difference between its hot and cold sides. To ensure efficient operation of the TEG under varying conditions, a reliable maximum power point tracker (MPPT) is crucial. Fractional control with non-integer parameters allows for more precise and flexible control of the system. This paper proposes an optimized fractional PID-based MPPT that addresses dynamic response and oscillation issues, outperforming other optimization algorithms and tracking methods.

Hegazy Rezk, Tabbi Wilberforce, A. G. Olabi, Rania M. Ghoniem, Enas Taha Sayed, Mohammad Ali Abdelkareem

Summary: The parameter identification of a Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) involves using optimization algorithms to determine unknown variables that are crucial for accurately predicting the fuel cell's performance. This study compared five optimization methods and found that the Bald Eagle Search (BES) algorithm achieved the lowest sum square error (SSE) of 0.035102, indicating accurate performance prediction. BES was identified as suitable for developing digital twins and control systems in the automotive industry. Additionally, BES demonstrated faster convergence compared to other algorithms. This research highlights the use of metaheuristic algorithms in fuel cell performance prediction for digital twin development in the automotive sector.

Heat Transfer Intensification of a Confined Impinging Air Jet Via a Guiding Baffle

Hussein M. Maghrabie, M. Attalla, Mustafa Abdelfattah

Summary: The study investigates the heat transfer enhancement of a confined impinging jet using rough surfaces, pin fins, and modified nozzles. A guiding baffle is introduced to enhance the cooling process of a single confined air jet impinging on a flat plate. The effects of Reynolds number, guiding baffle diameter-tonozzle diameter ratio, and guiding baffle height-to-nozzle to impinging plate distance ratio on the cooling process are studied. Experimental results show that installing a guiding baffle with a diameter-to-nozzle diameter ratio of 2 enhances heat transfer, and an empirical correlation is proposed to predict the average Nusselt number based on the Reynolds number, diameter ratio, and height ratio.
