Novel antimicrobial BC membranes were prepared by covalently grafting kanamycin onto regenerated bacterial cellulose (RBC) membranes. The kanamycin grafted RBC membrane displayed excellent antibacterial activity towards various microorganisms without any kanamycin leaching, and also showed good biocompatibility in MTT assay.
Kanamycin covalently grafted onto regenerated bacterial cellulose (RBC) membranes were constructed to prepare novel antimicrobial BC membranes. The prepared kanamycin grafted RBC membrane exhibits nanoporous three-dimensional network structure with a large surface area and high porosity. The antibacterial activity was explored and the result shows that the kanamycin grafted RBC membrane displays excellent antibacterial activity towards E. coli, C. albicans and S. aureus without any kanamycin leaching. Furthermore, MTT assay was carried out and the result demonstrates that the kanamycin grafted RBC membrane displays good biocompatibility.
