Summary: Despite the decline in smoking prevalence due to smoke-free policies, the number of non-smokers exposed to second-hand smoke hazards continues to increase globally. A systematic analysis of the disease burden caused by second-hand smoke is necessary to reduce harm. The study found that deaths and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) caused by second-hand smoke have been increasing, highlighting the need for stronger prevention measures.

Summary: Hearing loss affects access to spoken language and can negatively impact social wellbeing. By 2019, an estimated 1.57 billion people globally had hearing loss, with 403.3 million having moderate or higher severity. By 2050, it is projected that 2.45 billion people will have hearing loss, a 56.1% increase from 2019.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive assessment of the burden estimates and temporal trends of blindness and vision loss at the global, regional, and national levels. The results show that blindness and vision loss continue to cause significant loss of healthy life. Females have higher burden estimates, and South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa have the highest burden. The burden estimates of blindness and vision loss are negatively associated with sociodemographic index levels. The temporal trends in burden estimates are negatively correlated with the estimates in 1990 and positively correlated with human development indices in 2019. Reasonable resource allocation and health-service planning are recommended for the prevention and early intervention of vision loss-related disabilities.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the disability weights of specific cancer in a large Chinese population. Two types of web surveys were conducted to investigate 254 health states, including 30 new states for specific cancer, and estimate their disability weights using paired comparison methods. The disability weights of specific cancer varied greatly at diagnosis and primary treatment stage, and using these weights, a total of 1,967,830 YLDs of cancer were recorded in China.

Summary: Facial fractures have seen an increase in incidence globally over the past 27 years, but the age-standardized incidence rate is on a downward trend. Syria experienced a significant increase in cases, contributing significantly to the global health burden of facial fractures. The age-standardized rates for facial fractures were nearly double in males compared to females.

Summary: The study investigates the sex differences in disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) due to ischemic stroke (IS) in terms of year, location, and age. The findings show an increase in DALYs number worldwide despite a slight decrease in age-standardized DALYs rate (ASDR) of IS. The sex differences in DALYs number have decreased over the years, while the men to women's ASDR ratio has slightly increased. The variations in IS DALYs by sex were observed across different regions and age groups, mainly attributed to the disproportion of cardiovascular risk factors between sexes.

Summary: This study analyzed the expression of selected microRNAs (miRNAs) associated with multiple sclerosis (MS) in an Iranian population. The results showed a significant decrease in the relative expression of miR-10, miR-21, and miR-124 in MS patients compared to healthy individuals. The findings suggest that altered expression patterns of miRNAs may be involved in MS development. Further large-scale observational studies are recommended.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia with increasing prevalence and burden in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. This study analyzed data from 1990 to 2019 and found that the prevalence, death rates, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of dementia have increased. Afghanistan had the highest DALY rate, while Egypt had the lowest. The burden of dementia was higher in females and increased with age. The DALY rate of dementia decreased with increasing sociodemographic index but slightly increased at an SDI of 0.75.

Summary: Immunotherapy has shown promise in cancer treatment, and bispecific antibodies (BsAbs) are antibody constructs that can bind to two different epitopes. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy and safety of BsAbs in solid tumors, and found that BsAbs did not significantly improve overall survival, progression-free survival, objective response rate, and disease control rate compared to conventional therapies, but did increase the rate of stable disease. Further high-quality randomized controlled trials on BsAbs in solid tumors are recommended.

Summary: This article conducted a systematic review on oncology-related studies that developed and validated prognostic models using machine learning. The findings revealed the presence of spin, i.e., overinterpretation of findings, in these studies. The inconsistent reporting and use of overly strong or leading words in the publications indicate the need for caution when reading and using prognostic models in oncology.
