This study conducted a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis on the treatment of carotid blister aneurysms, finding that stent coil and flow diversion techniques had higher rates of favorable outcomes compared to surgery. Although there was a trend towards improved patient outcomes with endovascular techniques, statistical significance was not achieved.
Objective: Carotid blister aneurysms remain a formidable surgical challenge with varied surgical options. There have been significant advancements in the endovascular management of these aneurysms with the introduction of flow diverters. The comparative risk profiles for different endovascular options compared to surgical management of these lesions is not completely understood. Methods: The study is a comprehensive systematic review and meta-analysis on the treatment of carotid blood blister aneurysms. Pubmed searches were used to identify relevant articles and patient level data was extracted. Two and three group analyses were conducted comparing surgical and endovascular strategies and surgical, stent coil and flow diversion techniques respectively. Patient outcomes were graded on the modified Rankin Scale with a score of 2 or less defined as favorable. Results: In total, 83 studies (41 and 42 studies on surgical and endovascular interventions, respectively) with 1119 patients met our inclusion criteria. A statistically significant difference (at the 5% level of sig-nificance) in the effect among three different interventions was not found (Q = 3.41, p = 0.1815) under the random-effect model. Our results did show summary proportions of favorable outcomes were higher in the stent coil (0.87, 95% CI: 0.79 - 0.94) and flow diversion (0.87, 95% CI: 0.75 - 0.96) than that of surgery (0.76, 95% CI: 0.71 - 0.83). Conclusions: Our results suggest a trend towards improved patient outcomes with endovascular tech-niques compared to surgical strategies but statistical significance was not achieved. We also found that endovascular techniques compare favorably. Increasing retreatments were found to negatively affect patient outcomes. (c) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Summary: Novel stool protein biomarkers of colorectal cancer were screened and validated through the use of aptamer-based methods and ELISA validation in multiple cohorts. MMP9, fibrinogen, myeloperoxidase, and haptoglobin emerged as promising stool biomarkers for colorectal cancer, with potential clinical utility in early diagnosis. Longitudinal studies are warranted to further assess the effectiveness of these biomarkers.

Summary: This study described the plasma proteome related to the endotheliopathy of trauma (EoT) and found elevated levels of endothelial and catecholamine biomarkers in EoT patients. Proteomic analysis revealed differentially expressed proteins between the EoT and non-EoT groups, which are involved in endothelial activation, coagulation, inflammation, and oxidative stress, and may contribute to end-organ damage and poor clinical outcomes.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of ten urine protein markers in distinguishing disease activity in childhood-onset Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (cSLE). The results showed that urinary ALCAM, PF4, and VCAM-1 are potential biomarkers for predicting kidney disease activity in cSLE, and they hold potential as surrogate markers of nephritis flares in these patients.

Summary: The study found that the COVID-19 pandemic had significant effects on Adenotonsillectomies (TA) and Tonsil Related Cases (TC). In 2020, there was a noticeable decrease in TC and TA, followed by a quick rebound to even higher levels than before the pandemic. However, in the majority of 2021, this rebound halted and the numbers decreased to lower than pre-pandemic levels.

Summary: This study identified potential biomarkers for bladder cancer diagnosis and disease progression using aptamer screening and systems biology analysis. Urine d-dimer showed high sensitivity (97%) for bladder cancer diagnosis, while urine IL-8 and IgA were associated with disease progression. These biomarkers could be used for initial triage and patient follow-up, reducing the need for invasive cystoscopy-based diagnostic methods.
