Short-term exposure to PM2.5 was associated with elevated heart rate and increased fibrinogen levels, but there is insufficient evidence to suggest that exposure to PM2.5 might induce adverse cardiovascular effects through the pathway of inflammation.
Epidemiological evidence of short-term fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure on blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR) and related inflammation biomarkers has been inconsistent. We aimed to explore the acute effect of PM2.5 on BP, HR and the mediation effect of related inflammation biomarkers. A total of 32 healthy college students were recruited to perform 4 h of exposure at two sites with different PM2.5 concentrations in Wuhan between May 2019 and June 2019. The individual levels of PM2.5 concentration, BP and HR were measured hourly for each participant. Blood was drawn from each participant after each visit and we measured the levels of inflammation markers, including serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein and plasma fibrinogen. Linear mixed-effect models were to explore the acute effect of PM2.5 exposure on BP, HR, and related inflammation biomarkers. In addition, we evaluated related inflammation biomarkers as the mediator in the association of PM2.5 and cardiovascular health indicators. The results showed that a 10 mu g/m(3) increment in PM2.5 concentration was associated with an increase of 0.84 (95% CI: 0.54, 1.15) beats/min (bpm) in HR and a 3.52% (95% CI: 1.60%, 5.48%) increase in fibrinogen. The lag effect model showed that the strongest effect on HR was observed at lag 3 h of PM2.5 exposure [1.96 bpm (95% CI: 1.19, 2.75)], but for fibrinogen, delayed exposure attenuated the association. Increased fibrinogen levels may account for 39.07% (P = 0.44) of the elevated HR by PM2.5. Null association was observed when it comes to short-term PM2.5 exposure and BP. Short-term exposure to PM2.5 was associated with elevated HR and increased fibrinogen levels. But our finding was not enough to suggest that exposure to PM2.5 might induce adverse cardiovascular effects by the pathway of inflammation.

Improving the Impact Resistance and Antisplash of Civil Air Defense Wall: Experiments and Finite-Element Simulation

Chenglong Shi, Jigang Zhang, Xiangying Wang, Feifei Liu, Wenli Chen, Zhehao Ma, Haizhi Liang, Yang Zhao

Summary: Pendulum impact testing and numerical analysis were conducted for the first time on civil air defense walls sprayed with 2-mm polyisocyanate-oxazodone (POZD) coatings at different positions, in order to prevent serious casualties and secondary injuries caused by high-speed splashing concrete fragments. The results showed that spraying a 2-mm POZD coating can significantly reduce damage, restrain splashing of fragments, ensure wall integrity, and improve impact resistance and airtightness. Additionally, using large-rupture-strain fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) on the back improved bending stiffness and deformation capacity, reducing residual displacement. The failure modes and characteristics obtained from this study provide evaluation criteria for existing civil air defense walls.

Summary: This study investigates the performance of T-joints in the jacket foundation of offshore wind turbines under impact loading by means of experimental and simulation analysis. The deformation pattern and dynamic response of one hollow T-joint and eight concrete-filled double steel tubular T-joints (CFDST T-joints) are explored through a pendulum testing machine. The experimental results indicate that the local indentation dominates in the deformation process of hollow T-joint while the failure mode of CFDST T-joint will be commonly the global bending. The impact force-displacement curves corresponding to different parameters have similar tendencies and each curve can be divided into four stages. Increasing the impact velocity and axial compression ratio can reduce impact resistance. Meanwhile, increasing outer tube thickness and changing hollow rate exert a remarkable effect on the dynamic performance. Finite element models are then proposed to validate the experimental results and investigate the energy dissipation mechanism of T-joints under impact loading. The plastic deformation of the outer tube is the main energy dissipation mechanism for CFDST T-joints. In general, the investigation in this study offers a reliable basis for the study of impact failure mechanism for CFDST T-joint.

Dynamical behavior and modulation instability of optical solitons in nonlinear directional couplers

Fei-Fei Liu, Xing Lu, Jian-Ping Wang, Yi-Cheng Wu

Summary: This paper focuses on the dynamical behavior and modulation instability of optical solitons in nonlinear directional couplers. The expressions of single soliton solutions are derived, and the hyperbolic secant-type pulse is used to excite the input channel. The dynamical behavior of single optical soliton in traditional directional and negative index material couplers with varying self-phase modulation is discussed. Based on linear stability analysis, the distribution of modulation instability gain is studied, and the effect of dispersion, nonlinearity, and input power on modulation instability gain is investigated. It is worth noting that the physical information neural network algorithm performs well in simulating the transmission of an optical pulse in the coupler and leading to novel optical waves. These results contribute to understanding the generation of soliton-like excitation and lay a foundation for exploring novel optical solitons in nonlinear directional couplers.

Summary: Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR)-based sensors have great potential in medical diagnosis, food safety regulation, and environmental monitoring. This paper presents an improved plasmonic sensor based on Fano resonances between LSPR and the Rayleigh anomaly (RA), which allows for the formation of narrowband reflection peaks within the LSPR-based broadband extinction window. By carefully adjusting the angles of incident light, the sensor can be optimized for detecting local refractive index changes caused by the bonding of target molecules on the surface of the nano-device. The hybrid sensor demonstrates significantly higher figure of merit (FOM) compared to traditional RA- and LSPR-based sensors.
