This review summarizes the research progress of Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) for energy and environmental applications, including approaches to improve electrochemical performance, key challenges and prospects, and specific suggestions to meet the increasing demands for advanced applications.
Nowadays, energy solutions and environmental remediation methods are vigorously developed to tackle the energy crisis and environmental pollution. Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) stand out as good performance with the three-dimensional (3D) open framework, high surface area, controllable structure, and peroxidase-like activity. Researchers are trying to break the limitation caused by the inherent defects of PBA and have explored several approaches to improve the electrochemical performance, such as suppressing the vacancy formation, combining with functional materials or substances, and constructing hollow or core-shell structures. In this review, we summarized the research progress of PBA composites and PBA derivatives for energy and environmental applications, including electrochemical energy conversion and storage, adsorption, electrochemical sensors and biosensors in view of relationship between structure, material composition, and electrochemical performance. Moreover, we have pointed out the key challenges and prospects of PBA composites and their derivatives and put forward several specific suggestions to satisfy the increasing demands for advanced applications.
