Summary: This study aimed to estimate the impact of social isolation on cognitive function and mental health among older adults during the COVID-19 period. The results showed that older adults with dementia had a higher proportion of worsening cognitive impairment and exacerbation or new onset of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia compared to healthy older adults with subjective cognitive decline (SCD) and worsening mental health. The severity of dementia, care options, and mobility restriction measures did not significantly affect the number of older adults with dementia reporting worsening cognitive impairment and behavioral symptoms, but the length of isolation did affect behavioral symptoms. This study highlights the importance of addressing the impact of social isolation on cognitive function and mental health among older adults.
