The article aims to encourage discussion on physical literacy in the German-speaking sport science community, noting that the concept is slowly gaining recognition but has not been extensively explored. It highlights the challenges and opportunities for further research and interdisciplinary discussions in German language sport science to enhance understanding and promotion of physical literacy.
This article is intended to encourage discussion about the concept of physical literacy in the German-speaking sport science community. The first step illustrates how the concept of physical literacy is currently embraced both internationally and in German-speaking countries. Particularly concerning German language sport science, we would like to elaborate on a few observations in this respect. It becomes clear that physical literacy only appears to hesitantly permeate the research landscape of German-speaking countries. In addition, it is discernible that current German language concepts are retrospectively substantiated and expanded through physical literacy. The existing drafts, however, vary in terms of their specific content focus. Furthermore, in German language sport science physical literacy has so far hardly been discussed in an interdisciplinary manner. In the second part, we take these observations as a starting point and discuss challenges and opportunities as to why German language sport science should deal more intensively with physical literacy. In this context, we identify four challenges. Physical literacy has to be discussed both conceptually and terminologically. In addition, German language sport science should pick up interdisciplinary ideas of physical literacy and react accordingly. The discussion of physical literacy could also promote international visibility and may inspire physically related practices in a more holistic manner.

Mental Qualities and Techniques in Tactical Populations: A Systematic Review

Johannes Raabe, Elmer Castillo, Johannes Carl

Summary: In recent years, the application of sport psychology services has expanded to different performance domains, particularly within tactical populations. The research findings suggest that developing mental qualities and techniques among tactical populations can lead to positive cognitive, affective, and behavioral outcomes, but there are still gaps and limitations that need to be addressed in future studies.

A Novel Monitoring System (AUT FIT) for Anthropometrics and Physical Fitness in Primary School Children in Austria: A Cross-Sectional Pilot Study

Gerald Jarnig, Johannes Jaunig, Reinhold Kerbl, Rodrigo Antunes Lima, Mireille N. M. van Poppel

Summary: Monitoring anthropometric and physical fitness parameters in primary school children is important for preventing future health problems. This study designed and evaluated a monitoring tool called AUT FIT, consisting of measurements for height, weight, waist circumference, and eight fitness tests. Data from 821 children showed good reliability and ease of implementation for most tests. Strong correlation between physical education teacher rankings and rank scores for motor fitness indicated the tool's validity. Implementing AUT FIT in the Austrian school system could be crucial for monitoring and improving the health and fitness of primary school children.

Examining the sustainability and effectiveness of co-created physical activity interventions in vocational education and training: a multimethod evaluation

Eva Gruene, Johanna Popp, Johannes Carl, Jana Semrau, Klaus Pfeifer

Summary: In this study, co-created multi-component physical activity interventions in vocational education and training were evaluated for their sustainability and effectiveness. The study found that co-creation approach appeared promising for long-term intervention implementation in nursing care, but not in automotive mechatronics. Various influencing factors at different levels were found to impact the sustainability and effectiveness of the interventions. Demonstrating effectiveness at the individual level proved to be challenging. Methodologically complex and elaborate evaluation designs will be required to conclusively clarify the role and impact of co-creation.

Summary: This study comprehensively assessed and compared the implementation of physical literacy (PL) in research, policy, and practice across Europe. The analysis revealed heterogeneity in PL situations in different countries, but also identified similarities. The research suggests that academic activities should be intensified to further develop conceptual and linguistic aspects of PL and promote its integration into practical and political spheres.
