The study found that blockchain technology has a positive impact on green supply chain practices, with environmental orientation mediating the relationship and technological orientation strengthening it. The study recommends considering service sector firms in future research and emphasizes on the importance of infusing Industry 4.0 technologies, such as blockchain, in manufacturing concerns for various benefits.
Purpose This study investigates the impact of blockchain technology on green supply chain practices with the aim to promote pro-environmental settings in supply chains of manufacturing firms. Moreover, mediating role of environmental orientation is examined between blockchain technology and green supply chain practices. Also, moderating role of technological orientation in this connection is undertaken. Design/methodology/approach The authors have applied a quantitative methodology in which a questionnaire was developed from literature. After that, data are collected from manufacturing firms of Malaysia. The data collected are analysed by using PLS-SEM in which multiple regression and moderation are applied. Findings The results of this study confirm the positive impact of blockchain on green supply chain practices. Also, the mediating role of environmental orientation is revealed in this relationship. Moreover, technological orientation is confirmed as a moderator which strengthens the relationship between blockchain technology and green supply chain practices. Research limitations/implications This study has collected data from manufacturing firms of Malaysia. However, the authors have not undertaken service sector firms. Thus, they recommend future researchers to consider service sector firms in this context. Moreover, they have taken SMEs for this study and have neglected large firms. Therefore, in future, large firms could be taken to test the current study's perspective in them. Furthermore, this study suggests to the policymaker and managers, especially of manufacturing concerns, to infuse Industry 4.0 technologies such as blockchain technology because of its manifold benefits. Practical implications This study suggests to the policymaker and managers, especially of manufacturing concerns, to infuse Industry 4.0 technologies such as blockchain technology because of its manifold benefits. First, it will enhance the integration across the streams of the supply chain; secondly, it will improve the demand and supply planning which will eliminate the extra production and will enable firms to adopt just-in-time production by saving various costs associated otherwise. Importantly, these processes are against the pro-environmental behaviour which is pivotal to achieve green supply chain practices. Originality/value This study contributes by joining the technological perspective of Industry 4.0 technologies and sustainability perspective of green supply chain in manufacturing concerns. In addition, the related concepts of technological orientation and environmental orientation are also undertaken to further adjoin the former fields. As a practical contribution, this study will, first, enhance the integration across the streams of supply chain; secondly it will improve the demand and supply planning which will eliminates the extra production and will enable firms to adopt just-in-time production by saving various costs associated otherwise. It is also suggested to instil pro-environmental behaviour or environmental orientation in the employees at all levels of firm. Moreover, technological orientation should also be improved by emphasizing on the importance of technology for environmentally friendly and green supply chain practices.

Customer acceptance toward Islamic personal financing in Pakistan

Muhammad Ali, Syed Ali Raza, Chin-Hong Puah, Muhammad Shujaat Mubarik

Summary: This study is the first attempt in Pakistan to examine the determinants of Islamic personal financing using a modified theory of reasoned action (TRA) model. The study finds that pricing of Islamic personal financing and religious obligation have a negative impact on the intention to use Islamic personal financing, while attitude and social influence are not significant predictors. Government support, on the other hand, is positively associated with the use of Islamic personal financing.

Summary: The study investigated the epidemiological pattern of infectious gastroenteritis in selected urban areas in Malaysia. The analysis of laboratory requests and socio-demographic details revealed that both mono-infection and co-infection were present, with mono-infection being more prevalent among adolescents and young adults, and co-infection being more common among infants. Bacteria, particularly Salmonella spp., were the main cause of mono-infection, while co-infections involved a combination of bacteria and viruses such as EPEC and Norovirus. The peak season for infectious gastroenteritis was observed from August to October. These findings suggest potential contamination in the food supply and reduced hygiene in food sanitation, leading to health issues in children in Klang Valley, Malaysia.

Interdisciplinary challenges in the circular supply chains: A systematic literature review

Raja Zuraidah Rasi, Hazim Ismail, Muhammad Saeed Shahbaz, Veera Pandiyan Kaliani Sundram

Summary: This paper conducts a systematic review of the literature to examine the trends, conceptualizations, and barriers of circular supply chains (CSC). The findings show that although there are differences in defining the circular economy (CE), the goal of CSC remains the same: promoting sustainable strategies and rejecting the traditional linear paradigm that harms the environment. Eight significant interdisciplinary issues and corresponding sub-challenges were identified. This study provides guidelines for future researchers to address the challenges from a real-world perspective considering social, environmental, and economic perspectives.

Supply chain sustainability in VUCA: role of BCT-driven SC mapping and 'Visiceability'

Muhammad Shujaat Mubarik, Sharfuddin Khan, Simonov Kusi-Sarpong, Mobashar Mubarik

Summary: This study explores the impact of blockchain technology on supply chain sustainability, focusing on the roles of visibility, traceability, and mapping, collectively referred to as 'visiceability'. The findings challenge the belief that supply chain traceability alone mediates this impact, but confirm the significant roles of supply chain mapping and visibility. It suggests that firms can enhance supply chain sustainability by developing intermediary capabilities, rather than solely relying on blockchain technology. The study also highlights the importance of leveraging blockchain technology to improve supply chain visibility and uplift sustainability.

Co-pyrolysis of biomass and plastic: Circularity of wastes and comprehensive review of synergistic mechanism

Chiun Chao Seah, Chung Hong Tan, N. A. Arifin, R. S. R. M. Hafriz, A. Salmiaton, Saifuddin Nomanbhay, A. H. Shamsuddin

Summary: Fossil fuels have played a vital role in fueling the rapid development of technologies and industries, but they have also caused critical global issues such as waste generation, depletion of fossil fuels, environmental pollution, and climate change. Biomass waste and plastic waste are two major anthropogenic wastes, with only a small portion being recycled. Recycling biomass and plastic waste into biofuels through pyrolysis presents a promising solution, as it enhances the yield and quality of biofuels. This review highlights the synergistic mechanism of biomass and plastic co-pyrolysis and provides insights into recent advances in this field.

Significance of Illuminance Level in Hafazan Learning Task

Raja Nur Syaheeza Raja Mohd Yazit, Elina Mohd Husini, Atta Idrawani Zaini, Mohd Khedzir Khamis

Summary: Light holds a sacred and important position in major monotheistic religions such as Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. In educational spaces, the utilization of daylight has a positive impact on students' learning tasks. Specifically, in educational spaces dedicated to reading and memorizing the Quran, the acceptable illuminance level is related to students' learning tasks. Research has shown that efficient daylighting, with a recommended illuminance level between 300 to 500 lx, positively influences students' learning task performance. However, lower illuminance levels may enhance performance in specific tasks such as hafazan. Further study is required to determine if hafazan learning tasks require lower illuminance levels.
