This study investigates the impact of mobile Internet use on multidimensional poverty in rural China, finding a significant negative impact on poverty reduction. There is also evidence of regional heterogeneity in the effect of mobile Internet use on poverty. These findings emphasize the importance of mobile Internet use in strategies to reduce multidimensional poverty in rural households.
Although reducing poverty has become an important issue for rural development in China, few studies have analyzed the role of mobile Internet use in multidimensional poverty. To fill this gap, this study investigated the impact of mobile Internet use on multidimensional poverty, using data collected from a household survey in rural China. Because households generally decide whether to use mobile Internet by themselves, an endogenous switching regression model was employed to control for potential selection bias. In total, 9.63% of the households were identified as multidimensionally poor and the adjusted multidimensional poverty incidence was 5.47%. The results also showed that mobile Internet use has a significant negative impact on multidimensional poverty. Further, we provide evidence of heterogeneity in the effect of mobile Internet use across regions. These findings highlight the importance of mobile Internet use in multidimensional poverty reduction strategies for rural households.

Disabled Peers and Student Performance: Quasi-Experimental Evidence from China

Bin Huang, Haiyang Lu, Rong Zhu

Summary: The presence of disabled students in a classroom has a significant negative impact on the academic achievement of their non-disabled classmates, attributed to their disability status rather than characteristics. The social spillovers of disabled students lead to worsened learning environment and increased social interactions with disruptive peers at school. However, there is no evidence that disabled students impair the learning efforts or educational aspirations of their non-disabled classmates in the same classroom.

Perceptions of upward social mobility and life satisfaction in China: the moderating role of Internet use

Haiyang Lu, Ivan T. Kandilov

Summary: This study examines the impact of perceptions of upward social mobility on life satisfaction using nationally representative data from the 2019 Chinese Social Survey. It finds that perceptions of upward social mobility have a significant positive impact on life satisfaction, and this effect is mediated by perceptions of social fairness and political trust. The study also investigates the moderating role of Internet use and finds that it attenuates the positive impact of perceptions of upward social mobility, particularly among males, urban residents, and younger adults.

Multidimensional Inequality and Subjective Well-Being in China: A Generalized Ordered Logit Model Analysis

Long Yang, Haiyang Lu, Meng Li

Summary: This study used a nationally representative survey data from China and the generalized ordered logit model to examine the effect of multidimensional inequality on subjective well-being. The results showed that the rural sample had higher multidimensional inequality compared to urban respondents. Moreover, comparison analysis revealed geographical differences in multidimensional inequality across different regions of China. The findings of the generalized ordered logit model demonstrated that multidimensional inequality had heterogeneous effects on subjective well-being, with negative impacts on individuals with lower levels of SWB and positive effects on those who self-rated as happy. This study extended the existing literature by measuring inequality in a multidimensional setting and provided evidence on the effect of multidimensional inequality on subjective well-being.
