The present study aims to describe dietary intake and dietary adequacy according to eating location in preschool children. A sub-sample of 2414 children from the Generation XXI birth cohort (Porto, Portugal), evaluated during the follow-up between 2009 and 2011, was included. Dietary intake was assessed by 3d food diaries and four groups of children were defined according to the eating location: 'Home' (>= 80% of meals at home), 'Other homes', 'Preschool' and 'Restaurants'. A dietary adequacy index was developed based on general recommendations for children; a higher score represents a better dietary adequacy. The comparison of nutrients and foods daily intake according to the eating location groups was performed by ANOVA and ANCOVA to adjust for potential confounders. Children classified in 'Preschool' group ate significantly more vegetables, fruit, bread and fish, and less meat, compared to children classified into the 'Home' group. Children classified in the 'Restaurants' group ate more cakes, salty snacks and fruit juices than children in 'Home' group; and less vegetables, dairy products and pasta/rice/potatoes. In 'Restaurants' children obtained the lowest mean score of the dietary adequacy index (15.5, 95% CI 14.8, 16.3) and in 'Preschool' children had the highest mean score (18.3, 95% CI 18.1, 18.4), corresponding to a better dietary adequacy. Preschools seem to have a relevant role in promoting the intake of healthy foods in preschool children. The consumption in restaurants/coffee shops seems to contribute to energy-dense food intake and reduced consumption of nutrient-dense foods.

Are problematic eating behaviors from 4-to 7-year-old explained by genetic, shared factors or individual characteristics? A longitudinal twin study

Claudia Ribeiro, Milton Severo, Andreia Oliveira, Henrique Barros, Elisabete Ramos

Summary: This study based on twins explores the influences of genetics, shared environment, and individual characteristics on changes in problematic eating behaviors from 4 to 7 years old. The findings suggest that shared environment plays a major role in these changes, with genetic characteristics becoming less relevant over time.

Ultra-processed food consumption deteriorates the profile of micronutrients consumed by Portuguese adults and elderly: the UPPER project

Luiza Antoniazzi, Renata Costa de Miranda, Fernanda Rauber, Milena Miranda de Moraes, Claudia Afonso, Cristina Santos, Carla Lopes, Sara Rodrigues, Renata Bertazzi Levy

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between micronutrient intake and the degree of food processing, as well as the association between the consumption of ultra-processed foods and micronutrient inadequacies in Portuguese adults and elderly individuals. The findings reveal that ultra-processed foods have lower content of vitamins and minerals compared to unprocessed or minimally processed foods. High energy contribution from ultra-processed foods is associated with lower density of vitamins and minerals. Public health actions promoting a reduction in the consumption of ultra-processed foods are important.

Summary: Although the detrimental effect of micronutrient deficiency on neurodevelopment is well established, the potential impact of macronutrient intake on the early life neurodevelopment of healthy term infants has been rarely studied. This study found no association between macronutrient intake at 12 months and cognitive development at 3 and 5-6 years. Further research is needed to clarify the relationship between early fatty acid intake and neurodevelopment.

Meat or meatless meals at lunch and dinner - exploring the associated factors and transition between meals

Catarina Carvalho, Milton Severo, Daniela Correia, Carla Lopes, Duarte Torres

Summary: This study aimed to explore the factors associated with meat and meatless meal consumption and assessed the use of multi-state models to describe transitions between lunch and dinner. The study found that women, older individuals, and those with higher education were more likely to choose meatless meals and had a lower risk of transitioning back to meat in the following meal. Strategies to replace meat with more sustainable foods should be tailored to different population groups.

Parental Feeding Practices and Children's Eating Behaviours: An Overview of Their Complex Relationship

Alexandra Costa, Andreia Oliveira

Summary: Multiple studies have shown a connection between eating behaviors and weight status as well as obesity risk in children. These eating behaviors are influenced by both genetic and environmental factors. Parents have a crucial role in shaping children's food environment and experiences. This paper aims to review the literature on how parental influences affect eating behaviors in childhood, particularly focusing on parental feeding practices. The relationship between parental feeding practices and children's eating behaviors has been extensively studied, but most findings come from cross-sectional studies, which means the possibility of reverse causality cannot be ruled out.
