Recent findings have demonstrated that a nine-miRNA signature (ImmiRSig) in gastric cancer patients can effectively stratify patients into high- and low-risk groups with significantly different survival rates. The ImmiRSig may serve as an independent prognostic factor and have significant clinical implications for guiding personalized treatment and improving outcome predictions in gastric cancer patients. Additionally, ImmiRSig may potentially predict the clinical efficacy of chemotherapy based on its associations with chemotherapeutic agents.
Recent findings have demonstrated the superiority and utility of microRNAs (miRNAs) as new biomarkers for cancer diagnosis, therapy, and prognosis. In this study, to explore the prognostic value of immune-related miRNAs in gastric cancer (GC), we analyzed the miRNA-expression profiles of 389 patients with GC, using data deposited in The Cancer Genome Atlas database. Using a forward- and backward-variable selection and multivariate Cox regression analyses model, we identified a nine-miRNA signature (the ImmiRSig, consisting of miR-125b-5p, miR-99a-3p, miR-145-3p, miR-328-3p, miR-133a-5p, miR-1292-5p, miR-675-3p, miR-92b-5p, and miR-942-3p) in the training cohort that enabled the division of patients into high- and low-risk groups with significantly different survival rates. The ImmiRSig was successfully validated with an independent test cohort of 193 GC patients. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses indicated that the ImmiRSig would serve as an independent prognostic factor after adjusting for other clinical covariates. Pending further prospective validation, the identified ImmiRSig appears to have significant clinical importance in terms of improving outcome predictions and guiding personalized treatment for patients with GC. Finally, significant associations between the ImmiRSig and the half-maximal inhibitory concentrations of chemotherapeutic agents were observed, suggesting that ImmiRSig may predict the clinical efficacy of chemotherapy.

Summary: This study identified a correlation between autopolyploidy and the global expansion of Solidago canadensis from temperate to hot-summer climates in introduced regions. The research demonstrated a negative correlation between ploidy levels and latitude, as well as a positive correlation with average temperature, indicating the key role of ploidy in plant growth and reproduction under different climate conditions.

Polyploidy-promoted phenolic metabolism confers the increased competitive ability of Solidago canadensis

Xianghong Yang, Jiliang Cheng, Beibei Yao, Huan Lu, Yu Zhang, Jingxuan Xu, Xiaoling Song, Kandhasamy Sowndhararajan, Sheng Qiang

Summary: The study found that introduced tetraploids and hexaploids of Solidago canadensis in China's invasive habitat have superior competitive ability over local weeds, forming a monodominant community. Phenolic metabolism analysis showed high accumulation of total phenolic compounds in these introduced populations, contributing to significant allelopathic effects. This suggests that post-introduction adaptive evolution enhances the allelopathic abilities of introduced polyploids, making them more competitive against local plants and contributing to their successful invasion.

Can the Target Responsibility System of Air Pollution Control Achieve a Win-Win Situation of Pollution Reduction and Efficiency Enhancement?

Jie Wang, Hao Xu, Jingxuan Xu

Summary: This paper empirically examines the effect of China's Key Cities for Air Pollution Control policy on both firms' pollutant emissions and their total factor productivity (TFP) using the difference-in-differences (DID) method. The results show that the policy not only significantly decreases firms' pollutant emissions but also improves their TFP. The policy reduces pollutant emissions mainly through stimulating internal innovation rather than end-pipe treatment or production cuts. Moreover, capital-intensive and private firms, as well as firms in regions with a high degree of marketization or strong environmental law enforcement, are more responsive to the environmental target responsibility system.

Outcomes of postoperative adjuvant transarterial chemoembolization for hepatocellular carcinoma according to the Ki67 index

Jing-Xuan Xu, Wan-Ting Xing, Yu-Chong Peng, Yuan-Yuan Chen, Lu-Nan Qi

Summary: The study found that the efficacy of postoperative adjuvant transarterial chemoembolization (PA-TACE) in hepatocellular carcinoma patients at high risk of postsurgical recurrence is related to Ki67 expression levels. PA-TACE showed better tumor-free survival rates in patients with low or moderate Ki67 expression levels compared to surgery alone. In patients with high Ki67 levels, PA-TACE did not lead to improved outcomes.

Down-regulation of ALDOB during metabolic reprogramming mediates malignant behavior in hepatocellular carcinoma and insensitivity to postoperative adjuvant transarterial chemoembolization

Jing-Xuan Xu, Shui-Lin Qin, Hao-Wen Wei, Yuan-Yuan Chen, Yu-Chong Peng, Lu-Nan Qi

Summary: This study found that down-regulation of ALDOB may be one of the underlying causes of metabolic reprogramming in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and is closely related to the insensitivity of postoperative transarterial chemoembolization (PA-TACE). By promoting the malignant behavior of HCC cells, down-regulation of ALDOB may enhance the proliferation, invasion, and migration abilities of tumors. Using ALDOB and Ki67 as combined markers has the potential to identify the most suitable patients for PA-TACE treatment.
