Summary: By searching for esophagectomy and surgery keywords on YouTube and evaluating 82 videos from the first 150 results, it was found that about two-thirds of the videos demonstrated the Ivor Lewis technique and were performed using thoracoscopic/laparoscopic methods. Industry-sponsored videos scored significantly higher than those produced by individuals and academic centers.

Summary: Surgical journals make use of YouTube as a social media platform to share videos for educational and promotional purposes. The use of YouTube videos by surgical journals has benefits such as disseminating reliable information, language versatility, open access and portability, increased visibility for authors and journals, and the humanization of the journal interface. However, challenges need to be addressed, including viewer discretion, copyright protection, Internet connection limitations, algorithmic barriers, and violations of biomedical ethics.
