The study showed that serum Se and Zn levels were significantly lower in patients with acute ischemic stroke, while Cu levels did not differ significantly. Patients with AIS had significantly higher Cu/Zn and Cu/Se ratios, indicating disturbed metal homeostasis as a significant contributor to the pathogenesis of AIS.
Background: In recent years, trace elements (TEs) have gained considerable attention in the course of treatment and diagnosis of ischemic stroke. The purpose of the conducted research was to determine the trace mineral status (Se, Cu, Zn, Cu/Zn ratio, and Cu/Se ratio) in patients with acute ischemic stroke compared to the population of healthy people in the northeastern region of Poland. Materials and methods: 141 patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and 69 healthy control subjects were examined. The serum concentrations of mineral components were assessed by the atomic absorption spectrometry method. Clinical parameters were updated based on medical records. Results: The serum Se and Zn concentrations were significantly decreased (p < 0.0001; p < 0.0001) in patients with AIS compared with healthy control subjects. However, no significant differences were revealed in terms of the serum Cu concentration (p = 0.283). As expected, we found that the serum Cu/Zn and Cu/Se molar ratios were significantly higher (p = 0.001; p < 0.0001) in patients with AIS compared with healthy control subjects. Conclusions: Disturbed metal homeostasis is a significant contributor to AIS pathogenesis. Furthermore, marked disruption of the serum Cu/Zn and Cu/Se molar ratios could serve as a valuable indicator of AIS patients' nutritional status and oxidative stress levels.

Is area-level socioeconomic deprivation associated with mortality due to circulatory system diseases in Poland?

Jacek Jamiolkowski, Agnieszka Genowska, Andrzej Pajak

Summary: This study aimed to assess the relationship between socioeconomic deprivation (SED) and mortality due to circulatory system diseases (CSD) in 66 sub-regions of Poland. The results showed that more deprived areas experienced a greater decrease in CSD-related mortality, especially for women. Therefore, comprehensive preventive measures addressing socioeconomic factors such as poverty, education, and employment are needed to reduce CSD mortality, particularly in less urbanized areas.

Body Composition of Young Women and The Consumption of Selected Nutrients

Elzbieta Karpinska, Justyna Moskwa, Anna Puscion-Jakubik, Sylwia Katarzyna Naliwajko, Jolanta Soroczynska, Renata Markiewicz-Zukowska, Katarzyna Socha

Summary: The choices of food products and their nutritional value have a significant impact on nutritional status and body composition parameters. BMI may not reflect the actual condition of the body. The study aimed to assess energy consumption and selected nutrients, evaluate BMI and body composition parameters among young women, and analyze the correlations between nutrients and body parameters. The results showed that education on proper nutrient consumption, including plant-based protein and dietary fiber, is essential in preventing overweight and obesity.

Metabolic Syndrome as a Factor of Impairment of Antioxidant Defense System in Youth with T1DM

Monika Grabia, Katarzyna Socha, Artur Bossowski, Renata Markiewicz-Zukowska

Summary: Research suggests that adolescents with T1DM may develop MetS and experience oxidative stress. This study aimed to investigate the effects of MetS on antioxidant defense in T1DM patients. The findings showed significant differences in total antioxidant status and oxidative stress index between the MetS+ and MetS- groups. Additionally, certain markers such as eGDR, OSI, and HbA1c may be useful for diagnosing MetS in T1DM adolescents.

Summary: Colorectal cancer is a common malignancy worldwide, and lifestyle and eating patterns can play a significant role in its prevention. Bioactive food ingredients, particularly those found in bee products, have been found to influence the gut microbiome and potentially have a protective effect against colon cancer. This review focuses on the epidemiology and risk factors of colon cancer, as well as the potential role of bee products, such as propolis and bee honey, in chemoprevention.

Determinants Related to Oxidative Stress Parameters in Pediatric Patients with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

Monika Grabia, Katarzyna Socha, Jolanta Soroczynska, Artur Bossowski, Renata Markiewicz-Zukowska

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the body's ability to defend against oxidative stress (OS) in individuals with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and the impact of metabolic management, antioxidant intake, and glycemic monitoring systems (GMS). The results showed that T1DM patients were more susceptible to OS compared to healthy individuals, and flash and continuous systems were beneficial in improving OS parameters. Additionally, dietary intake of vitamin A and C had an effect on serum total antioxidant status.

Disturbed Ratios between Essential and Toxic Trace Elements as Potential Biomarkers of Acute Ischemic Stroke

Anna Mironczuk, Katarzyna Kapica-Topczewska, Katarzyna Socha, Jolanta Soroczynska, Jacek Jamiolkowski, Monika Chorazy, Agata Czarnowska, Agnieszka Mitrosz, Alina Kulakowska, Jan Kochanowicz

Summary: This study compared the levels of toxic metals (Cd, Pb) in AIS patients with a control group in Poland and assessed their correlation with clinical data. The study found significantly higher Cd blood concentration and molar ratios in AIS patients. However, there were no considerable differences in relation to blood Pb concentration. It is crucial to investigate the potential role of exposure to metal mixtures in AIS.

Summary: It is important to analyze the antioxidant activity and content of antioxidant elements in infant and young children's diet. In this study, the antioxidant properties and the content of Cu, Se, and Zn in baby products were assessed. The results showed that fruit and vegetable mousses had the highest total phenolic content and free radical scavenging. Dairy products had the highest levels of Cu and Se, while porridges had the highest content of Zn. Organic baby food contained significantly more Zn compared to conventional food.
