This study focused on the extraction of flavonoids from peanut shells using ultrasound, comparing the results with traditional extraction methods and optimizing the process parameters for maximum yield. Two kinetic models were introduced to describe the extraction kinetics and predict parameters, showing good performance and slight loss of fit. This work contributes to reducing degradation, economically evaluating extraction processes, and providing insight into the mechanism of ultrasound.
In this work, extraction of flavonoids from peanut shells has been studied in the presence of ultrasound and the results are compared with Soxhlet and heat reflux extraction for establishing the process intensification benefits. The process optimization for understanding the effects of operating parameters, such as ethanol concentration, particle size, solvent to solid ratio, extraction temperature, ultrasonic power and ultrasonic frequency, on the extraction of flavonoids has been investigated in details. The highest extraction yield (9.263 mg/g) of flavonoids was achieved in 80 min at optimum operating parameters of particle size of 0.285 mm, solvent to solid ratio of 40 ml/g, extraction temperature of 55 degrees C, ultrasonic power of 120 W and ultrasonic frequency of 45 kHz with 70% ethanol as the solvent. Two kinetic models (i.e. phenomenological model and Peleg's model) have been introduced to describe the extraction kinetic of flavonoids by fitting experimental data and predict kinetic parameters. Good performance with slight loss of goodness of fit of two models was found by comparing their coefficient of determination (R2), root mean square error (RMSE) and/or mean percentage error (MPE) values. This work would provide the reduction of degradation and the economic evaluation for the extraction processes of flavonoids from peanut shells, as well as give a better explanation for the mechanism of ultrasound.

Effects of process parameters on the extraction of total anthocyanins from purple sweet potatoes by ultrasound with wide frequency and its kinetics study

Jianqing Liao, Bo Peng, Xinhong Chu, Guicai Yu

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of ultrasound frequency and other process parameters on the extraction yield of total anthocyanins (TA) from purple sweet potatoes (PSPs) using a wide frequency-based ultrasound-assisted extraction (WF-UAE) method. The results showed that ultrasound frequency had the greatest influence on the extraction yield, followed by temperature and treatment time. Optimized parameters resulted in higher TA extraction yield compared to traditional methods. Kinetics models were used to predict and validate the extraction process. The application of WF-UAE technology has potential in extracting active components from various natural materials in the industry.

Summary: In this study, VO2 thin films with good optical properties were fabricated on practical float glass by magnetron sputtering and annealing method. The films showed high near-infrared switching efficiency and energy modulation ability, as well as high visible transmittance. The crystalline and microstructural characteristics of the films were investigated, and the effects of doping and annealing on the film properties were discussed.

Summary: In this study, multi-frequency ultrasound was used to extract bioactive compounds from purple eggplant peels. The effects of different factors on the extraction yield were investigated, and the optimal conditions were determined. The results showed that tri-frequency ultrasound was the most efficient in improving the extraction of total phenolic content and total monomeric anthocyanins.

Summary: Berries are rich in anthocyanins, vitamins, fiber, polyphenols, essential amino acids, and other ingredients, making them highly nutritious and medicinal. Anthocyanins, the bioactive components in berries, exhibit various biological activities such as vision protection, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, inhibition of lipid peroxidation, anti-cardiovascular disease effects, control of hypoglycemic conditions, etc. Therefore, it is necessary to systematically review the research progress and future prospects of anthocyanins to enhance understanding of their absorption, metabolism, and biological activities.

Effects of ultrasound frequency and process variables of modified ultrasound-assisted extraction on the extraction of anthocyanin from strawberry fruit

Jianqing Liao, Hongkun Xue, Junling Li, Ling Peng

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of ultrasound frequencies on extracting anthocyanin from strawberry fruit using modified ultrasound-assisted extraction (MUAE) method. The results showed that MUAE achieved a maximum yield of 796.9 μg/g of anthocyanin at a frequency of 62-64 kHz, with 55% ethanol as the solvent, ultrasound power of 120 W, temperature of 45℃, treatment time of 12 min, and solvent to solid ratio of 6 mL/g. MUAE exhibited higher anthocyanin yield compared to heat-assisted extraction and ultrasound-assisted extraction, with an increase of 42% and 22% respectively.
