The SAMURAI Superconducting Analyzer enables measurements of heavy ion collisions at the RIKEN radioactive isotope beam factory, providing constraints on the equation of state of neutron-rich nuclear matter. The S pi RIT TPC allows for excellent particle reconstruction and isotopic resolution for pions and other charged particles.
The Superconducting Analyzer for MUlti-particles from RAdioIsotope (SAMURAI) Pion-Reconstruction and Ion-Tracker Time Projection Chamber (S pi RIT TPC) was designed to enable measurements of heavy ion collisions with the SAMURAI spectrometer at the RIKEN radioactive isotope beam factory and provides constraints on the equation of state of neutron-rich nuclear matter. The S pi RIT TPC has a 50.5 cm drift length and an 86.4 x 134.4 cm(2) pad plane with 12 096 pads that are equipped with the generic electronics for TPCs. The S pi RIT TPC allows for an excellent reconstruction of particles and provides isotopic resolution for pions and other light charged particles across a wide range of energy losses and momenta. The details of the S pi RIT TPC are presented, along with discussion of the TPC performance based on cosmic rays and charged particles emitted in heavy ion collisions.

Summary: We report on the first proton-induced single proton- and neutron-removal reactions from the neutron-deficient 14O nucleus with large Fermi-surface asymmetry Sn - Sp 1/4 18.6 MeV at similar to 100 MeV/nucleon, a widely used energy regime for rare-isotope studies. The measured inclusive cross sections and parallel momentum distributions of the 13N and 13O residues are compared to the state-of-the-art reaction models, with nuclear structure inputs from many-body shell-model calculations. Our results provide the first quantitative contributions of multiple reaction mechanisms including the quasifree knockout, inelastic scattering, and nucleon transfer processes. It is shown that the inelastic scattering and nucleon transfer are important tools for investigating single-particle strengths and correlations in atomic nuclei.

Yasuda, K. Yoneda, J. Zenihiro

Summary: The dineutron correlation was studied in three different Borromean nuclei near the neutron dripline. The correlation angle between valence neutrons was found to be largest in the same range of intrinsic momenta, which suggests a connection to the nuclear surface. This result reinforces the prediction of universal dineutron formation in environments with low neutron density, such as the surface of neutron-rich Borromean nuclei.

K. Higuchi, J. Tanaka, R. Tsuji, M. Boehmer, R. Gernhaeuser, S. Kawase, J. Zenihiro, Y. Hijikata, R. Matsumura, K. Yahiro, S. Takeshige, H. Baba, E. Takada, T. Uesaka

Summary: The ONOKORO project aims to uncover the formation mechanism of clusters in atomic nuclei and is developing a new detector array for measuring energies and angles of light ions emitted in the reactions. The silicon tracker shows good resolution in tracking particles with regards to angular and energy-loss. Performance tests on prototype silicon detectors with 100 μm thickness and strip width were conducted, producing energy-loss spectra with a good signal-to-noise ratio. The detectors have optimized dynamic ranges to detect Z = 1 and Z = 2 ions emitted in cluster-knockout reactions.

Summary: The sorption of astatine and bismuth from nitric acid media by several ion exchange resins was studied. Compared to extraction chromatography resins, using ion exchangers for astatine separation and purification has the advantage of not having any organic media in the effluent. The behavior of these resins in high concentration HNO3 solutions was investigated, and possible mechanisms for astatine sorption were proposed.

Summary: The dependence of the nuclear caloric curve on neutron excess limits our knowledge of the nuclear equation of state and affects predictive capabilities of nuclear reaction and nuclear astrophysics models. The asymmetry dependence of the curve remains uncertain in theoretical models. To provide constraints, we measured evaporated particles and heavy residues for fusion-evaporation reactions. The temperatures extracted from light charged particles favor higher temperatures for neutron-rich fused systems, but are near the limits of systematic uncertainty. This measurement serves as an upper limit for constraining the asymmetry dependence of the nuclear caloric curve.

Summary: Neutron-proton equilibration in dynamically deformed nuclei during heavy ion collisions has been experimentally studied, revealing that the composition of the two heaviest fragments evolved to be more similar with respect to their orientation angle. By performing Constrained Molecular Dynamics and Antisymmetrized Molecular Dynamics simulations with different formulations of the density dependence of the asymmetry energy term, it was found that a softer interaction in the nuclear equation of state provides better agreement with experimental results.

Summary: The beta decay of 142Te90 to 142I89 was investigated for the first time. The parent nucleus was produced by the in-flight fission of a 238U beam with an energy of 345 MeV per nucleon, impinging on a 9Be target at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory of RIKEN. Excited states in 142I were established by beta-delayed gamma-ray spectroscopy. The (1+) states in 142I were found to be predominantly formed by a Gamow-Teller transition between a neutron and a proton in specific orbitals.
