Summary: Pauling proposed the theory of naturally occurring layered alumo(magnesium)silicates (asbestos) minerals in 1930, and later chrysotile and hallyosites nanotubes were discovered in 1950 with the advancement of transmission electron microscopy. The new mechanism for the formation of nanotubes from inorganic compounds with layered structure via seaming of chemically reactive rims was proposed, leading to the discovery of nanotubes like WS2, MoS2, GaSe and BN in subsequent years.

Summary: Sustainability and peace have long been considered intrinsically interrelated, yet there is a lack of specific focus on the sustainability-peace nexus in academic and policy discourses. Systemic approaches and international scientific collaboration are essential for capturing the dynamic interactions between peace and sustainability and addressing issues at the intersection of the two fields.

Summary: Clinical reasoning and research in modern geriatrics often prioritize the disease concept. However, the disease framework fails to explain the root causes of age-related chronic diseases and the variability in illness presentations. Applying the underused illness concept and complex system thinking can offer new routes for prognosis and treatment, as well as improve treatment targets for older individuals.

Summary: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major global cause of morbidity and mortality. Acute exacerbations of COPD (AECOPD) leading to hospitalization are a significant health issue with implications for disease outcomes and healthcare resources. Severe AECOPD can result in acute respiratory failure (ARF) requiring admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) for invasive mechanical ventilation. AECOPD also poses comorbidity risks in critically ill patients, which are associated with poorer prognoses.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the tendency of the public to disregard scientific judgements, highlighting the need for a major overhaul in science education. Three ambitious goals for science education at all levels are proposed, with an emphasis on teaching the public how to approach scientific problems, understand the scientific enterprise, and solve everyday problems using scientific methods. It is argued that the introductory courses in biology and other science disciplines at the university level are the best starting point for these improvements.
